This weekend the latest installment of the Transformers franchise hits the silver screen. Director Michael Bay delivers everything fans have come to expect proving this series is definitely not headed for extinction anytime soon. The film is missing regular cast member Shia LaBeouf, and stars Mark Wahlberg who just recently collaborated with Michael Bay on the Florida true crime story film “Pain and Gain”.
It begins in the future years after the second film ended, and there are multiple story lines going at the same time. Some seem to have almost been forgotten but then they come back full circle in the end. One of the first scenes a beautiful scientist Darcy Tirrel ( actress Sophia Myles) uncovers a dinosaur made of an rare metal. Then they switch to Mark Wahlberg as Cade Yeager, a down on his luck Texas inventor, and single dad to daughter Tessa (Nicola Peltz) .
At first its hard to imagine Wahlberg as being a father to a young woman who looks like the age of his usual co-stars but Wahlberg pulled off the protective father bit with charm.Bays constant focus on Tessa’s extreme daisy dukes shorts give the impression he assumes his fan base consists primarily of hot blooded males. Daisy dukes aside Miss Peltz did a great job as the sweet, smart and sometimes rebellious daughter.
Fans know the Autobots are the real stars of the film featuring Rachet (Robert Foxworth), Optimus Prime ( Peter Cullen), Bumblebee ( no voice credit found) , Hound (John Goodman), Drift ( Ken Wantanebe), and Crosshairs (John DiMaggio), and comic relief Brains ( Reno Wilson). Other cast members are T.J. Miller as Yeager’s partner Lucas Flannery , Jack Reynor as Shane Dyson as Tessa’s boyfriend, Kelsey Grammar as evil ex CIA agent Harold Attinger, Stanley Tucci as scientist Joshua Joyce turned greedy corporate figurehead, Bingbing Li as Su Yueming his assistant.
Cities have been destroyed and the Autobots have been framed for crimes they did not commit and have gone into hiding on earth. There are constant wanted ads put our regarding the capture of any “aliens” . Unfortunately Rachet (an Autobot) has been discovered and is being attacked by government forces, and Lockdown. Lockdown is a powerful evil bounty hunter Transformer who travels the universe wiring for governments and greedy corporations.
Meanwhile scavenging for new things to repair and sell Yeager stumbles upon an old semi parked in an old movie theatre (rather unrealistic). He buys the massive truck and tows it back to his ranch completely unaware that his new purchase is about to change his life forever. An epic battle ensues with the annihilation of the earth at stake, as well as the existence of the Autobots, and their new friends.
Transformers Age of Extinction is action packed! It’s exotic locations in the USA as well as overseas in China and special effects make it visually stunning. And the story lines of evil and greed versus good had the audience cheering. The way the film wrapped up left room for … you guessed it a sequel!
