So it took me a couple of years of investigating, researching and allowing companies to perfect products until I made the ultimate choice to purchase my Microsoft Surface Pro 3. Just like everyone else I wanted something that could easily travel with me so that I could leave the heavy 17 inch laptop at home.
Unlike others I was not going to bow to the grand Apple just on their promises. I am not naïve, I have used Apple products; there is an iPad Air in my home owned by my daughter so I had had the time to maneuver through the Apple tablet and really check it out. Have to say I missed the way my Gmail opened in windows as just an example of how applications differ when being used on an Apple product.
The Microsoft Surface sparked my interest for its promise of being more than just a simple tablet.
Okay so maybe one of the most important factors when one is deciding between Apple, Samsung or Microsoft tablet products might be the price. The saying, “You get what you pay for” definitely comes to play in this scenario. At first glance Microsoft Surface Pro 3 might be a few more dollars, but when you factor in what you get for your money it is well worth the extra bucks.
Beginning at $799 for the simplest Surface Pro 3 running on a capable 64GB storage with an i3 processor can certainly fill most people’s tablets needs. Setting the Surface products apart from other manufacturers is the ability to choose more storage alternatives as well as the faster i5 and i7 processor options. The price of course goes up as one chooses a Surface Pro 3 that has more storage and a faster processor.
In exchange for the higher price though, is the option of ridding your life of needing an expensive laptop or desktop computer to use at home or at the office. Not one other tablet on the market can compare to Microsoft’s promise of having “The power and performance of a laptop”. At first glance the plain Surface may appear just like the others but add the keypad and use the kickstand and one completely forgets they are using a tablet in place of a laptop. Purchase the additional docking station option and the Surface Pro 3 can easily replace any laptop with the same storage and processing speeds.
Surface Pro 3 lived up to its promises and more
I am a very selective person when it comes to choosing my technology that is to assist me in my life. I watched the launch of the original Surface and was immediately intrigued. I not only use my computer for the norm, I also write and use AutoCAD LT 2011 as a designer, so I was waiting for a tablet that could do more for me than act like a giant smart phone. As Microsoft worked out the usual newly born product kinks and launched the Surface Pro 2, I got even more captivated by the devices promises. With the debut of Microsoft’s finely tuned Surface Pro 3 with the 12 inch screen it was time for me to investigate further.
I wanted a tablet that could perform in place of a laptop when I was on the go or for emergencies like in a super storm. Most important for me was that it would accept all of the programs that I used. Windows was not a problem, Microsoft runs on windows so my word and excel would work fine. But how about a powerful program like AutoCAD?
I researched and am sad to say not even Auto Desk could tell me if my AutoCAD LT 2011 would run on the Surface. What I gathered it seemed to be more of a Windows 8 vs Windows 7 issue than with the Surface. I was seeing that newer AutoCAD programs could definitely work on it. So why not just purchase a newer AutoCAD? Well for those who do not know… shhh, AutoCAD software is more expensive than most computers, even updating my 2011 would be an additional costly $800, so not an option for me!
Although Apple products now allow for Microsoft Word and AutoCAD, shouldn’t one use the platform that they were originally designed for in order to get the best outcome from one’s hard work? Word and AutoCAD are just not the same programs when purchased for an Apple computer as they are when running in windows. And other than the generic AutoCAD 360 forget about really using AutoCAD to draw with on an iPad Air.
So after speaking with the wonderful Microsoft representative on the phone about my needs and wants I ordered my beautiful Microsoft Pro 3 with 256 GB for memory and an i5 processor. Along with the tablet I ordered the keypad in a fun purple color. With one day shipping I received my new tech purchase. Immediately I took it out of the lovely packaging and began to play. The Surface easily snapped onto the keypad just as in the funky commercials. I flipped out the adjustable kickstand and began my voyage.
Even though I was used to Windows 7, the Windows 8 was easy to learn. I was having fun with the touch screen and adding apps from the Surface store without any issues. The stylus accessory added another new joy for my Surface adventure. I ordered my Surface with the Word so that was ready to use. Now for the big question, will my AutoCAD really work on the Surface like it does on my powerful HP 17 inch i7 laptop? No DVD drive was not a problem, I simply downloaded my AutoCAD LT 2011 version from the Auto Desk site and popped in my serial number to activate. The AutoCAD was in and working.
The Surface only has one USB port and with AutoCAD one must use a mouse, so I took a trip to the Microsoft Store to pick up the USB arc touch mouse made specifically to work with my Surface. The mouse is super cool. It stores flat for great storage and traveling and when bent it activates the Bluetooth connection to my Surface.
Must say, super impressed with the Microsoft store and employees. No one needs to be called a genius at a Microsoft store because they obviously are very knowledgeable about the products without having a superfluous title. One is immediately made to feel like part of the Microsoft family. Water and juice are offered and one can ask any question and receive all of the help needed for any Microsoft query. The entire store has the look and feel of an interactive new age, high tech library. A comfortable work area is provided so that one may feel at home to learn about and play with their purchased products without being rushed out of the store.
My Microsoft Surface Pro 3 came to my rescue.
The Microsoft Surface Pro 3 that I purchased was living up to every promise. Memory was perfect for me, the speed of the i5 processor worked great even with the burden of my AutoCAD LT installed. The Surface replicates a laptop to the point that when I was traveling at the airport I took out my Surface, like I am so used to taking out my laptop, going through security. The Surface’s abilities really have amazed me. I feel as though I am using a laptop and not a tablet when working, yet the wonderful device easily turns into a tablet to read books and the news on.
Traveling on a three hour plane trip I placed my Surface in airplane mode. It only used about half of the battery and I passed the time using my ear phones plugged into my Surface to listen to music. Away from home base is not an issue when owning this great Pro 3. My biggest amazement is that when turning on from shut down mode the Surface comes to life instantaneously.
After owning my Surface for only a couple of weeks, my large and powerful Laptop crashed with “the blue screen of death”. Luckily I had someone at hand who could troubleshoot and hopefully fix my only 2 year old machine but now I really needed my Surface Pro 3 to come to my rescue and really do some heavy work.
Luckily I save all of my work, photos and folders to several locations including an external hard drive, various flash drives and to clouds including Microsoft’s OneDrive. At least I knew where all of my work was. I pulled up a floor plan out of the cloud that needed a revision. Yes, the AutoCAD LT 2011 is completely compatible with my Surface Pro 3. I am in heaven. So for the next few days my Surface performed as my trusty workhorse checking email, researching, revising drawings and writing.
With the Surface docking station accessory that I acquired, my Surface turned into a full-fledged desktop computer. The docking station provided me with five extra USB ports and even gave me the option of connecting a large HD monitor if I needed. Any work that I perform on the Surface easily is printed out connecting to a wireless printer, or with the docking station one has the capability to connect to a printer using a wire if needed.
Well my i7 HP laptop burned out and needed a new hard drive. Once it was fixed and back working I was almost tempted to pack it away and just keep using my new Surface. After owning the Surface Pro 3 for a month, traveling with it and having it, literally, save my technology filled life I can honestly say no one will go wrong with the purchase of Microsoft’s Surface Pro 3. I highly recommend the Surface Pro 3. It is surely worth its price and is great for those on the go who require the power of a laptop with the convenience and portability of a tablet. College students can toss the Apple iPad tablets and laptops in exchange for owning this one great product.
Apple better take their eyes off of Samsung for a moment and really watch their back with Microsoft. There is no comparison for the Surface Pro 3, truly living up to Microsoft’s promise “The new 12-inch Surface Pro 3 is the tablet that can replace your laptop.”
