The Minnesota Wild surrendered five goals in the third period to blow a three-goal lead to the New York Rangers Monday at Madison Square Garden.
Anthony Duclair and Mats Zuccarello scored 47 seconds apart to turn a one-goal deficit into a one-goal lead with three minutes and 11 seconds remaining in the game. Zuccarello finished the game with the game-winning goal as well as two assists.
The Rangers (5-4-0) got a pair of goals in the first five minutes of the third period to begin to build momentum. The Wild came right out of the second intermission flat and relaxed to allow the Rangers back into the game.
The Wild momentarily stemmed the momentum when Jason Zucker redirected a shot by Nino Niederreiter past Henrik Lundqvist. Zucker extended his team lead in goals to five at the 5:25 mark of the third period.
The Rangers came right back just under two and a half minutes later to get back to within one before the snowball came crashing through the Wild within the final four minutes of the game.
The Wild (4-3-0) dominated the first two periods with the help of four power play opportunities and 14 minutes of power play time. The Wild failed to score on any of the man advantages to run their streak to 24 scoreless power plays to open the season.
Nate Prosser, Matt Cooke and Jason Pominville all scored even strength goals in the second period to give the Wild a 3-0 lead heading into the second intermission.
The Wild return to action Tuesday against the Boston Bruins at the TD Garden.
