At last season’s NYFW in February 2014, designer Mischka Velasco showcased her newest fashion collection to a capacity fashion audience in NYC. The collections were well received by all and she is now back to unveil a range of new creations at her show on Sunday 7th September.
For this season, Mischka Velasco’s latest collection is inspired by two American concepts: NY State’s well-known Hamptons beaches and the burning man festival in Nevada’s black rock desert.
The Hamptons are all about the fetish and worship of banality, the quest for a normal retreat, a place that is odd in that it longs sorrowfully for that innocent wonder of a yard and the serenity of a white picket fence. At Burning Man in contrast, devotees create realities from their childlike imagination and people commune in costume, art, fantasy and eventually burn everything created as a symbolic ritual of letting go. Burning Man lasts for a week, the Hamptons much longer but is a heavily populated world only in the summer. The Hamptons and Burning Man both create strong impressions of prejudice or awe. It is the risk of visiting and either belonging or longing. Yet somewhere is her longing for Santa Monica that blends with everyone’s All American dream.
Velasco aims to consider the question of what is a simple kind of life and hopes she can find an answer to this challenge, using nude draped jersey, denim, feathers and the 50’s allure of something so American and so deep in our hearts.
Velasco was born in Panama, grew up in New York and the Pacific Northwest and has done a lot of traveling to Europe and Asia. Each collection is inspired by music and her observations of current events.
Velasco makes a quick croqui (strong intense sketches to evoke the feeling of fashion in general). She and her colleagues work as a team as they create sometimes a sketch, sometimes a drape and always a lot of excitement in the workspace. There is a passion for skipping the muslin and working directly with the cloth in the dresses. For menswear she enjoys adding clever little pockets in a handsome subtle way, such as welted pockets on dress shirts in fine cotton. Velasco’s label is funny, elegant, and always surprising.
According to Velasco she states, “My main goal is to always refine the journey of being true to myself, a part of which is to manufacture all of my clothes here in New York.”
