It’s not that I’m a die-hard Charlie Crist fan, but electing a Tea Party favorite like Rick Scott as governor here in Florida was an obvious mistake. Now it seems like these Floridians will do it again. Most polls show Scott with a slight margin over Crist, and so many people are easily duped by campaign ads. Scott will probably win a second term, and his poll numbers will then sink back where they were. Scott is loaded with money and has tons more to spend which means he’ll most likely win. The right-wing if nothing else, is good at one thing: convincing uneducated dupes to vote against their own self interest. Scott made a fortune in the health care business where, after he was booted out of running a hospital, the organization was busted with the biggest Medicare fraud fine in history. Scott is a snake, and one would have to be a dimwitted buffoon to vote for this guy. Why would any tax paying citizen vote for a candidate connected-even remotely-to such activity? Research Rick Scott in his former life as CEO of Columbia/HFC. Scott plead the 5th 75 times rather than open up about his company being involved in a fraud which would ultimately cost them $1.7 billion in fines.Medicare fraud takes taxpayer money and puts it in the pockets of those creeps who care about nothing-except profits.Witless dupes went ahead and voted this freak in as governor of Florida!
Now, from Florida, let’s travel north to another conservative enclave-my hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio. I love my city but, as I used to repeat all the time on my former weekly talk radio show I did there for 15 years- my motto for my beloved town:”why stand still when you can go backwards”? When it comes to politics, sports or culture, Cincinnati has a history of taking one step forward and two back. I remember back in 2006, while I still lived there, the city council authorizing an archaic and draconian law against marijuana possession that stipulated even holding small amounts of pot would be a misdemeanor. As more progressive areas of the United States were moving in the opposite direction, Cincinnati felt the need to crack down on small time pot users. Of course a law like this really meant low income types who would be the targets of this law. The middle class user or above, would rarely get caught with pot because most cops were already targeting inner city types for criminal activity. Blacks get pulled over more than whites, and in the process, this is where a cop could easily nail them for pot possession. Now, in 2014…guess what? Cincinnati city council realizes what a stupid idea this was and wants to repeal the law. It took them eight freaking years to realize what a moronic idea this was.By the way, black Americans have a tough enough fight to find work, and having an absurd charge like the possession of a small amount of dope isn’t going to help that effort.Despite what anyone thinks about US Attorney General, Eric Holder, he was on target about rehabbing a judicial system that has made America the world’s leader in prison confinement (we’ve imprisoned more people than China or Russia for God’s sake!). Harsh drug laws made that possibility a reality we need to change, and many conservatives agree.
The Republican Party is still pretty much a prisoner as well: of the extreme right. They still have their annual “Values Summit”. I love the name as it implies they have a monopoly on values. This is a con they continue to use as they did after 9/11 when they portrayed themselves as “patriots” to the exclusion of others, as if-to keep calling yourself a patriot-made you one. Their idea of being a patriot was to put a “support our troops” sticker on anything with wheels on it-and for the extreme right-that includes their homes (i.e.trailer parks). As I stated before, it’s a con that works because a substantial portion of America is made up of ignorant fools who react to this mindless blather. Political hacks spew out the same garbage as if to infer or actually state that they are more moral, more God-fearing, more involved in family values. I believe the Republicans, using this old but still viable litany of verbal vomit, will hold congress and probably take over the senate. In some ways, I hope they do so America can see what great ideas they have. So far it’s all about saying no to President Obama, and offering up more of the same: endless tax cuts for the very wealthy and cutting regulations.
Despite what the right keeps saying, our economy is coming back quite well when you look back to the only other financial meltdown that even comes close to our recent Great Recession. It took America about 12 years, and World War II to restart our economic engine since the stock market crash of 1929. Our rebound may not seem fast enough, but the world economy makes job creation much tougher that ever before, and Obama had virtually no help from a congress unwilling to lift a finger, even as people were losing their homes faster than almost any time in our history. They say yes to tax cuts for the rich, and no to helping the middle class.Yet, through demonizing Obama, using the laughable methods I’ve already cited, many will vote in more right-wing types who stand for little except fear mongering.
In the final analysis, I find nothing wrong with genuine conservatives. I have some conservative ideas like my belief in capital punishment. I have never been against gun ownership-it’s just America went berserk with gun availability. Trickle-down economics is a farce, but tax cuts-properly timed and aimed correctly can obviously be useful and effective.Wholesale deregulation is simply dangerous. It’s these extreme right-wingers who are basically insane. Don’t lecture me on morals- get your own house in order. I do find racism in many of these far right types-it’s actually quite obvious, and I have worked with thousands of personality types over the years. I lived, worked and traveled around America and know when I recognize racism. Yes, we do need a strong border and President Obama has deported more illegal aliens than any other president. He has also upped the amount of border guards. It’s all about logic and common sense-more than some infantile ideology. You simply can’t reason or compromise with these extreme right-wing types: they really think God is on their side. What progress can you hope to make with a people like this? I do think the future electorate will be smarter than the past or present. It had better be or we are screwed.
