Todd has the perfect setting in mind for his marriage proposal to Cammie, a remote lakeside cabin. But when his brother Sal shows up, and then shows up dead, his plans are shattered.
Mailin Akerman (Cammie), Tyler Labine (Todd), Lucy Punch (Masha), Dan Petronijevic (Salinger), Benjamin Ayres (Dov), Kenneth Welsh (Earl), Nancy Beatty (Mary), Sabrina Grdevich (Sgt. Mackenzie).
Cottage Country is a bit slow to start before launching a huge plot twist right into the middle of things. At that point the film picks up a bit more pace, comedy, and audience interest. Before long though reality is apparently suspended, the humor takes a bit of a lame turn, and audience interest remains lethargic through the end of the film.
Acting was amusing if not high quality. Akerman played well against Labine and both were pretty good with the humor as well as their delivery. Punch was amusing for a few minutes, and amusing for a few more as we discussed how her worn out look didn’t quite fit the film and pondered drug addiction. Petronijevic was very good in his role with very good delivery and a comfortable feel. It would be interesting to see him in some other roles. The remainder of the supporting cast was pretty good.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were all well done with good detail and quality. Action scenes were decent with nice gore, even if a bit unrealistic. Dialogue was somewhat immature but did create a few laughs here and there. Sound and soundtrack were both good.
Cottage Country is a trip to the woods best left to teens. The comedy is almost crotch humor while the plot is not far behind. While the film is somewhat entertaining you may question why you felt that way at the end. Fans of dark, romantic comedies may enjoy this one. Those looking for some depth or adult humor, keep on walking.
With some graphic violence, blood, gore, and sexuality, save this one for about 16 yrs. and older.
