When Soviet rebels gain control of nuclear missiles the U.S. forward deploys forces, including the nuclear submarine Alabama. With nerves on edge the command structure of the submarine breaks down when orders are cut-off mid-transmission.
Denzel Washington (XO Hunter), Gene Hackman (Capt. Ramsey), Matt Craven (Lt. Zimmer), George Dzundza (COB), Viggo Mortensen (WEPS), James Gandolfini (Lt. Dougherty), Rocky Carroll (Lt. Westergaurd), Jaime Gomez (Mahoney), Michael Milhoan (Hunsicker).
Crimson Tide begins well with extensive background, character introductions, and plot setup. Once underway the film picks a comfortable pace which is increased slowly and deliberately through the end of the film with key points of tension and suspense. Conceptually this film takes a poke at command structure on a U.S. nuclear submarine. When a tactical message is cut-off and only partially received during a tense stand-off the Captain and Executive Officer of the submarine interpret it differently leading to chaos and mutiny aboard the boat.
Acting was good in this one with Washington and Hackman working well with each other and each delivering nicely. Mortensen was enjoyable in a key role as well. Craven, Dzundza, Gandolfini and the remainder of the supporting cast did nicely throughout.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were very well done with good attention to detail. Submarine sets were nicely done with a realistic feel even if not entirely accurate. Physical action scenes were well done and fit the film. Effects were good, fitting the plot and supporting the realistic feel of the movie. Dialogue was enjoyable with nice detail and a natural feel. Sound and soundtrack were very good with a nice selection of tracks and good editing.
Crimson Tide is a very enjoyable military action adventure with a focus on command structure and breakdown in an interesting situation. The film has a good mix of action, intellect, and suspense that many should enjoy. If you enjoyed The Hunt for Red October put this one on your Must See list.
Other than some persistent foul language, this should be fine for older teens and above.
