During a dam accident due to torrential rains an armored truck becomes stranded in high waters and becomes a target for robbery. Tom, one of the truck guards, is able to hide the money which makes him a target to Jim, the robber, all while the town continues to flood.
Morgan Freeman (Jim), Christian Slater (Tom), Randy Quaid (Sheriff Collins), Minnie Driver (Karen), Edward Asner (Uncle Charlie), Michael Goorjian (Kenny), Dann Florek (Mr. Mehlor), Betty White (Doreen), Richard Dysart (Henry).
Hard Rain starts by defining the setting very well, along with character introductions and background. With the groundwork laid out, the film smoothly transitions to action and the storyline begins to unroll. Though the plot isn’t very original, there is no awesome CGI, but with some regular plot twists things get interesting about 10 minutes into the film and do a decent job of staying that way through the requisite Happy Ever After ending.
Slater once again finds a role that fits him fairly well as an ordinary guy in extraordinary circumstances and manages it well. Freeman was in type yet at the same time seemed to have fun with this one. Driver was an interesting choice but worked well with Slater and others. Quaid did well and was able to switch gears nicely with his role. The remainder of the supporting cast was solid.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were very well done and a major focus of the film. Flooding effects were good with a realistic feel. Physical effects such as stunts and action scenes were good with nice detail. Dialogue was solid and well formed. Sound and soundtrack were good.
After the water has gone, Hard Rain ends up being a pretty decent crime action film with a light but enjoyable plot, decent acting, and nice technical work. Those who enjoy light action with a simple plot will enjoy this the most. Those who want an intricate storyline or intense action may be a little disappointed.
With plenty of violence this should be fine for older teens and above.
