On his way to work Valentine’s Day morning radio shock-jock Grant Mazzy encounters a crazed woman by the side of the road. But that is only the beginning of a day he will never forget.
Stephen McHattie (Grant Mazzy), Lisa Houle (Sydney), Georgina Reilly (Laurel-Ann), Hrant Alianak (Dr. Mendez), Rick Roberts (Ken), Daniel Fathers (Nigel), Beatriz Yuste (Nancy).
Pontypool jumps right to plot setup and storyline, with character introduction and exploration to come along with the plot. While the film is a bit slow to unroll it perfectly builds suspense and draws us into the unusual story. This hidden gem, often billed as a zombie flick, is actually a very unique psychological thriller in which a virus like none ever seen before infects a small Ontario town. Though the premise really doesn’t hold up to scrutiny, conceptually the theme is quite unique and entertaining. Fortunately the film leaves some unanswered questions at the end which, if answered, probably would have ruined the film.
Acting was surprisingly well done with McHattie fitting his role perfectly and delivering with good energy. Houle did well as antagonist and also delivered a solid performance. Reilly was just plain enjoyable and projected a calming innocence well. Alianak, Roberts and the rest of the cast did nicely.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were good and the bulk of the film took place in only a couple of rooms, probably easing strain on the budget. Physical effects were good with a nice amount of gore and blood scenes along with action. Dialogue was very good with McHattie delivering some enjoyable lines throughout. Sound and soundtrack were also nicely done.
Pontypool is an enjoyable psychological thriller although those who enjoy unusual zombie flicks may enjoy this one as well. The plot is unique, technical work and acting is good, and the film builds suspense particularly well.
With some foul language, gore, and violence this should be fine for older teens and above.
