When his daughter is kidnapped, ex-mobster but now respectable businessman Paul Maguire rounds up his old crew to find her and punish those responsible. With extreme prejudice.
Nicolas Cage (Paul Maguire), Rachel Nichols (Vanessa), Max Ryan (Kane), Michael McGrady (Danny), Peter Stormare (O’Connell), Pasha Lychnikoff (Chernov), Patrice Cols (Anton), Weston Cage (Young Paul), Danny Glover (Det. St. John), Aubrey Peeples (Caitlin).
Rage is pretty calm at first with some simple character introduction before gliding smoothly to the main storyline. As things develop the story gets more interesting though the plot remains simple; Paul’s daughter is abducted, he gets angry and determined to get her back. Add some big mean guys, some guns and knives and things are off and running. Once the blood starts flowing however the plot becomes fairly predictable through the end of the film.
Acting was okay here but could have been better. Cage felt a bit more mellow in this one which was surprising considering the title and theme. He just didn’t bring the anger like we expected. Nichols was a nice addition and presented well. Ryan and McGrady felt a bit rough around the edges but fit the film. Glover delivered well in his usual style.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were all reasonably well done with nice detail. Action scenes were pretty good with some solid violence and stunt work. Dialogue was mediocre, adding some depth but not enough. Sound and soundtrack were both okay.
Rage suffers from a lack of rage. The story is simple and solid but the film just never develops the level of energy you would expect from such a title. Acting and dialogue both left something to be desired which may be why the film feels flat. Diehard action adventure fans may find some pleasure with this one.
With plenty of violence and some foul language, save this for teens 15 years and older.
