The idea of discovering a new species on Earth is always interesting and keeps imaginations running. Surface brings the idea alive in this 15 episode made-for-TV series, exploring the two parallel storylines well. The plot may not be unique but the series does a nice job of telling both tales fully rather than focusing simply on action or CGI. The ending is a bit disappointing and an obvious setup for future episodes but the series holds attention well and the focus on sci-fi is enjoyable.
Acting was a bit rough in this one but got slightly better with time. Bell has no lack of energy but often seems to lack emotion, feeling like a scared puppy. Pairing Ferguson, who has even more energy and less fear with Bell made for something of a chaotic performance by both. Jenkins did fairly well, maturing along with his role. The remainder of the supporting cast did fairly well.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were good with nice detail, variety, and use of natural landscape. CGI was fun but obviously CGI which made parts of the film a bit tough to swallow. Dialogue was pretty good with only a few bumpy spots and campy comments. Sound and soundtrack were both good.
Those who enjoy sci-fi with more plot than visual impact, or with a substantial amount of drama, will likely enjoy this series the most. Those expecting intense action or superb CGI may be a bit disappointed.
With some mild violence and sci-fi creature images this should be fine for preens and above.
