After the death of his wife, a psychologist moves to New York with his young son where he ends up working on a series of murders with the police. What he didn’t expect to find was that his son is of particular interest to the voodoo cult perpetrating the murders.
Martin Sheen (Cal), Helen Shaver (Jessica), Harley Cross (Chris), Robert Loggia (McTaggert), Elizabeth Wilson (Kate), Harris Yulin (Robert Calder), Lee Richardson (Dennis), Richard Masur (Marty), Jimmy Smits (Tom).
The Believers launches fairly well with some intense drama in the first few minutes. As the credits continue we get a slight bit of backstory and plot setup before returning to present day where things slow down for a while. As the story evolves we find a fairly detailed plot with only a few parallel storyline distractions. From there the film is a mix of suspense, psychological and supernatural horror, and mystery. The story finally finishes with some intense action that wraps things up nicely.
Acting was good with Sheen delivering well throughout. Shaver was entertaining but lacked authenticity at times. Loggia and Smits were both good, if a bit over the top once in a while. The remainder of the supporting cast was solid and entertaining.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds felt realistic and exhibited good attention to detail. Stunt work was nicely done and fit the film well. Dialogue was good and explained much of the film while keeping the plot moving. Sound was good while soundtrack was typical big screen background noise.
If you can believe in the supernatural for a while you will probably find The Believers to be fairly entertaining. Though the movie is looking a bit dated, it is still quite entertaining with a good plot, solid acting, and nice technical work. Supernatural thriller fans will likely enjoy this the most.
With plenty of violence, gore, some nudity and sexuality, and mild foul language, save this for older teens and above.
