God has given humans souls and to dark angel Gabriel, that means that God likes humans better than angels. As retribution, Gabriel descends to earth vowing to capture the most evil human soul in existence, thereby ending the angel war stalemate in heaven.
Christopher Walken (Gabriel), Elias Koteas (Thomas), Virginia Madsen (Katherine), Eric Stoltz (Simon), Viggo Mortensen (Lucifer), Amanda Plummer (Rachael), Adam Goldberg (Jerry).
The Prophecy starts off a bit slow with some background and character introduction before the plot begins to descend, along with Gabriel. Once the angels start to show up things get a bit more interesting as the film takes time to build suspense. With the plot now firmly in front of us, Lucifer makes an appearance and things really get rolling through the end.
Christopher Walken. Is there really anything else to say? He did a wonderful job as Gabriel, mixing darkness with a strange innocence. Koteas was good in his role, clearly putting for some effort. Stoltz was a nice choice as Simon and did well with the role. Mortensen made a wonderful Lucifer, blending violence with passion. The rest of the cast did nicely as well.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were good with nice variety and attention to detail. Physical effects were good and fit the film well along with having a nice, realistic feel and some lovely imagination. Dialogue was interesting, explained a lot, and kept the film moving at a good pace. Sound and soundtrack were both good.
In the end The Prophecy is the first film in a long living horror franchise that has a mature storyline, exhibits good technical quality, and employs a well experienced cast. Fans of supernatural horror should enjoy this one. Well worth a spot on your Must See List if you haven’t seen it yet.
With plenty of strong graphic violence, gore, and some foul language, save this one for older teens and above.
