Thor is back, this time fighting to save the Nine Realms from the villain Malekith, who plans to unleash the Aether weapon and turn them to darkness. At the same time, he must find Jane Foster and stop creatures from Svartalfheim from killing her.
Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Natalie Portman (Jane Foster), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Anthony Hopkins (Odin), Christopher Eccleston (Malekith), Jaimie Alexander (Sif), Zachary Levi (Fandral), Idris Elba (Heimdall), Stellan Skarsgard (Erik Selvig).
Thor: The Dark World begins with some background before laying out the plot in this episode. Unfortunately it feels like there is an assumption that we already know who the players are so things aren’t entirely clear. As the story starts moving things get more interesting as characters gain depth and the plot begins to make more sense. Just as quickly the film takes a turn, becoming a version of “Thor smash” while running headlong to a Happy Ever After ending that felt like a thinly disguised sequel setup.
Acting was reasonable with Hemsworth once again doing a decent job. Portman was entertaining and continued to work well with Hemsworth. Hiddleston was less used in this one, and played less of an antagonist, but did it nicely. Hopkins, Elba, and Skarsgard were delivering as usual, while Eccleston was a nice addition.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were good of course, but once again CGI was key to making things work. Special effects were pretty well done with only a few scenes feeling ridiculously unrealistic. Dialogue was good with some solid lines alongside some mild humor and sarcasm. Sound and soundtrack were both fairly good.
Thor: The Dark World ends up being a mediocre Sci-Fi Fantasy with more action than depth, and more confusion than consistency. Fans of the franchise will likely enjoy this while others will find it formulaic and on the lighter side of entertainment.
With plenty of violence, sci-fi content, and mild sexuality this should be fine for teens and above.
