Kassie DePaiva (Emma Parker), Julia Garner (Rose Parker), Ambyr Childers (Iris Parker), Jack Gore (Rory Parker), Bill Sage (Frank Parker), Kelly McGillis (Marge), Wyatt Russell (Deputy Anders), Michael Parks (Doc).
We Are What We Are begins well enough with some backstory and plot setup before transitioning smoothly into character development. It takes a while but eventually the plot reappears and the film finds a slow but steady pace, grinding along and building tension. Along the way Rose and Iris begin to question their family traditions, and possibly the sanity of their father. As their family secrets begin to leak out things get more interesting with the film winding down to an unusual, and unexpected, well done finish.
Acting was pretty good here with Garner, Childers, and Sage all delivering dark and disturbing performances. Parks also added nicely, bringing additional elements to the story. Gore, McGillis, Russell and the rest of the supporting cast did well.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were all good with nice detail and a consistently disturbing theme. Physical effects with action scenes and gore were well done. Costuming was nice and fit the film. Dialogue was solid throughout, as was sound and soundtrack.
We Are What We Are is a nice mix of horror and psychological thriller though the plot moves so slowly at times that some may be frustrated. Hanging on to the end however will leave you with a good, satisfying ending. Die-hard horror fans should check this one out.
With plenty of disturbing violence, gore, sexuality, nudity, and some foul language, save this one for the oldest teens and above.
