Attending the family reunion of her new boyfriend, Erin never expects the family to come under attack from a gang of masked killers. Nor did the killers expect to be dealing with Erin.
Sharni Vinson (Erin), Nicholas Tucci (Felix), Wendy Glenn (Zee), AJ Bowen (Crispian), Joe Swanberg (Drake), Margaret Laney (Kelly), Amy Seimetz (Aimee), Ti West (Tariq), Rob Moran (Paul), Barbara Crampton (Aubrey).
You’re Next begins with a quick glance at things to come as a way to whet our appetite. This is a good move as the movie stalls for a while as character introductions, development, and plot setup chew up some time. Once things finally get moving the film is more interesting with some decent action, horror, and some nice distractions but very little explanation. Toward the end, as things begin to wrap up, the film explains more of what has been happening and gets a lot more interesting.
Vinson did a very nice job in this one presenting a character with several different faces and making all of them work. Glenn, Bowen, and the rest of the cast did fairly well and felt solid. Tucci did well with good energy and delivery, as did Crampton.
Camera work, sets, and backgrounds were good with nice detail and fit the film well. Dark scenes were visible, gore shots were clear, and there was no fear of action scenes. Stunt work had a solid, realistic feel throughout. Dialogue was entertaining and helped hold attention well. Sound and soundtrack were both good.
In the end, You’re Next is a reasonably well done horror flick that doesn’t waste a lot of time on a detailed plot or fancy effects. It is quite simply a decently done horror flick. Genre fans should enjoy this one.
With some sexuality and nudity, foul language, and pervasive bloody violence, save this one for older teens and above.
