Melissa Anderson/ROCKwell UnScene: How are you guys surviving this heat with those masks?
Waylon/Mushroomhead: Adrenaline. You just have to push through it. It sucks. It’s tight to your face, you’re wearing all black, and by the end of it you’re the wicked witch. “I’m melting!!!!” One of my friends was watching and he said, “Dude, you looked like you had a water fountain pouring out of your mask.”
Melissa: For those people who haven’t seen a Mushroomhead show before, what can they expect?
Waylon: They might go in thinking one thing, and come out thinking another. You know, Mushroomhead is art. Mushroomhead is Mushroomhead, you don’t see or hear anything else like it. For newbies that come to the show, just prepare to have a good time.
Melissa: How does it feel to be a band that brings together older and younger fans, what I call a bridge band?
Waylon: Mushroomhead has always been that way. It’s a revolving door for those kids, and then we got the adults. It goes from 14 and up that I see at Mushroomhead shows and I love that.
Melissa: This is day 1 of Mayhem. How do you guys like it?
Waylon: For day one, you’re gonna have a lot of kinks. You know, we had to go fast and get all the stuff up there. It was like, lets knock the cobwebs off here, let’s do this. It was a fun set, I mean, a few things went wrong, but that’s just day one, man. Something always goes wrong on day one, you know, we got hit by a drunk driver last night.
Melissa: Wow. That fucking sucks.
Waylon: It was the 4th of July, what do you expect? It’s okay, nobody got hurt. The lady passed out and hit the guard rail. I walked over there to make sure she wasn’t dead and she was snoring and listening to Adelle. It was the funniest thing I’ve ever seen, it was so loud, haha.
Melissa: So, besides getting hit by a drunk driver, what else is new with Mushroomhead?
Waylon: We just released “Righteous & The Butterfly” back in May. We got J-Man back in the band. We got a new guitarist. New bass player. We got 3 singers now. Man, there is a lot of new Mushroomhead, now that I’m thinking about it.
Melissa: What’s next for Mushroomhead?
Waylon: Tomorrow. We just want to do better than what we did today. I try not to look at a big picture because you don’t know what happens in a big picture. Tomorrow is what I’m planning for.
