Music Under the Canopy’s final music festival of the year kicks off in three days. The Music Under the Canopy Jazz Festival will take place at Brenton Skating Plaza from August 1 through August 3. Single-day passes for the three-day event are $20 to $50 each and three-day festival passes run from $85 to $100. All tickets and passes, including VIP passes, are available online through MidwesTix. All three days will be open to all ages.
Friday’s headliner will be L.A.-based fusion group Hiroshima. The Grammy nominated group uses jazz, pop, R&B, new age, adult contemporary, and world music to craft a sound all their own. Hiroshima released their nineteenth album, entitled J-Town Beat, last fall, and they are celebrating 40 years of making music this year.
Saturday night will be capped off by 2013 Presidential Medal of Freedom winner Arturo Sandoval. The jazz trumpeter, flugel horn player, pianist, and composer has won ten Grammy Awards, six Billboard Music Awards, and an Emmy Award. He was a protégé and colleague of the great Dizzy Gillespie, and their relationship was recently chronicled in the book The Man Who Changed My Life. Sandoval’s most recent album, a tribute to the Fuente Family entitled Un Siglo De Pasion, came out last year.
Dominick Farinacci (featured video) will wrap up the festival Sunday night. Farinacci performed with Wynton Marsalis on a PBS Special at Lincoln Center at the tender age of 17. He would then become one of only eighteen musicians worldwide to be part of the inaugural class of the Jazz Studies Program at Juilliard. The trumpet player and big band leader, now 31, went on to top the Jazz charts in Japan and win numerous awards, including the International New Star Award in Japan and the Disney New Star Award.
