I was very sad to see Nan Desu Kan’s 18th year come to a close on Sunday the 14th. I really enjoyed this year, there was so much to see and do that it was hard to fit into one weekend. NDK celebrates Otaku culture by bringing anime enthusiasts of all backgrounds together for one big celebration.
There is so much to do at these conventions, you can purchase merchandise in the dealers room, support local artists by buying unique artwork, attend panels to meet guests and industry experts, play games, view cosplay, and so much more! One panel I really enjoyed was the extremely fun and interactive, David Vincent Voice Acting Tryout panel. My friends and I loved watching other fans play voice actor for a short time.
Another event I enjoyed involved the industry panels announcing upcoming titles released for DVD. Aniplex announced they will be releasing Gurren Lagann for Blu-ray! The first volume will be in stores on November 11th and will include the first five episodes from the series, posters, and interviews from the creators. They’ve also announced the new OTORIMONOGATARI for Blu-ray, yes that is the name of the anime. At the same time FUNimation showed previews for their new One Piece movie, Film Z, and the part two release of Attack on Titan. For more details on new title announcements, please visit FUNimation and Aniplex’s websites.
I’m not even sure where to begin with the cosplays, they were fantastic. I can definitely tell a lot of hard work and heart was put into these amazing outfits. There was also a great variety of anime and other geek culture references. I believe the most cosplays I’ve seen were from the series Kil la Kill, DRAMAtical Murder, and Fairy Tail. I was surprised to see a lot more Fairy Tail cosplayers than Tokyo Ghoul since that was one of the hottest anime of the summer but Fairy Tail has a lot more variety in characters and outfits than Tokyo Ghoul so that could have been a factor.
My absolute favorite event this year was the Anime Music Video (AMV) show. I loved the videos shown. My personal favorite video was the winner for the fun and upbeat category, “Otaku Paradise”. I loved how the editor incorporated both anime, cosplay, and otakus in general. It definitely captured everything that I loved about the anime fandom. The Iron Chef AMV winner was also really impressive, it’s hard to believe that the editors only had two hours to make it. My other favorite was the winner for the comedy category, “Ship Happens”. That video makes me crack up laughing every time! I also enjoyed “Up In Flames” in the action category even though it didn’t win any awards. NDK has a list of all the entries for the 2014 show, I highly recommend taking a look at all these wonderful videos.
Although I love going to NDK, I do wish they were able to get a bigger venue. The Marriott at the Tech Center has been a very gracious host but it has gotten crowded over the years. However, there aren’t any other hotels that could fit NDK other than the Convention Center but that’s too big for the size NDK is now. I’m hoping there will be another venue to help accommodate the many attendees in the future, in the mean time NDK fans will just have to sit tight.
I always have a great time at NDK, I can’t wait for 2015! Colorado always puts on a great convention and the people I meet at these events really make going worthwhile. In the meantime there are some awesome anime, Sci-Fi, and comic book conventions coming up before NDK 2015 so be sure to check them out as well.
