On June 4 Variety reported that actress Naomi Watts has been cast in “Insurgent,” the sequel to the popular science fiction film “Divergent,” as a woman named Evelyn. The film is based on the second book in the trilogy by author Veronica Roth, which will create four films in total. Evelyn in the leader of the Factionless, who will also appear in both “Allegiant” films.
The news comes just days after production on the second film began in Atlanta, which is a change since the first film was filmed primarily in Chicago where the books are set. Watts is the second actress to join the series, after Octavia Spencer joined last month. The film is currently scheduled for a March 20, 2015 theatrical release and is directed by Robert Schwentke.
“Insurgent” follows Tris (Shailene Woodley) and Four (Theo James) and their companions as they travel to Amity for shelter after the fall of Dauntless. They are being targeted by Jeanine (Kate Winslet) who will stop at nothing to prevent the group from learning the truth. The film will also see them visiting Candor, the truth faction, looking for allies.
“Allegiant,” which is the final book and will be split into two films, answers questions about the dystopian world where Tris lives and changes her future forever. There will be new characters, new dangers, and new locations no one saw coming. With help from the Factionless, Tris explores why the fence was put up and the aftermath of the war that created the faction system.
Comingsoon.net revealed on June 4 that Watts will appear in all three of the films, with the final two being released on March 18, 2016 and March 24, 2017. She will next be seen in the film “Birdman,” and most recently caused buzz for her portrayal of Princess Diana of Wales in the film “Diana.” She is most recognizable for her roles in the “King Kong” remake by Peter Jackson and the thrillers “Mulholland Drive” and “The Ring.”
The sequels were green lit by the studio just days after “Divergent” opened to successful numbers at the box office earlier this year. The third book was split into two films a few months later in order to incorporate all the important elements from the story to the film. All three films are expected to gross more than the original film at the box office both domestic and overseas.
Other returning cast members include Zoe Kravitz, Jai Courtney, Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Maggie Q, Mekhi Phifer, and Ray Stevenson. Production on the film will last through the summer and the next sequels will be filmed consecutively the following summer. A director is currently not attached to the future sequels, although someone else could helm both films.
