Michael Hutton, 18 has been charged with attempted murder after he allegedly beat his girlfriend so severely she was in a medically induced coma and needed brain surgery.
Hutton is accused of attacking 17-year-old Hannah Connaway late Friday evening after after the couple argued over text messages and tangled fishing line.
Hutton allegedly locked himself inside his Wilmington, NC home where Connaway was and beat her for an estimated 15 minutes.A friend of Connaways could hear her screaming from outside but could not get inside the home to help. Hutton’s parents were not home at the time.
Eventually the assault spilled outside where Hutton reportedly drug Connaway across the yard and choked her until she passed out. Claudene Williams, Connaway’s friend gave her account of the events: “He was angry because he couldn’t untangle fishing lines, He was blaming her (Hannah) for some things like having snarky remarks to things he was saying, and then it just escalated and kept on going.”
By the time 911 was called, Connaway was motionless on the ground: “She’s bleeding and on the ground. She can’t walk, It’s her boyfriend, and he’s threatening and screaming at us to get back in the car, so I just need someone to be there. “When first responders arrived on the scene Connaway was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center and Hutton was taken to the police station.
As of Wednesday, Hannah has opened her eyes and is communicating with loved ones. She is now listed in fair condition.Williams said that “Hannah opened her eyes today and was hoarsely talking …She seems a bit confused but is flashing us bright smiles. The left side of her body is still not moving like the doctors would like, but it will get there hopefully.”
Hutton appeared in court on Tuesday. He has been charged with attempted murder, felony assault by strangulation and first degree kidnapping, felony assault to inflict serious injury, among other charges. He potentially faces anywhere from 30 years to life without the possibility of parole. His attorney states that Hutton has no prior history but suffers from seizures that triggered the attack. An ex-girlfriend contradicts this theory by stating that Hutton is “not a good guy.”
It’s not known if there have been any other abusive incidents involving Hutton and Connaway.
