On Saturday the New York Jets released several players in order to get down to the 53 man roster limit by 4:00 p.m. EST. The list, which includes some surprises, is as follows:
Tajh Boyd (QB) — did not show much in camp, possibly a practice squad candidate.
Will Campbell (G)– continues to improve, the Jets would like to keep him around.
Troy Davis (LB) — a versatile player that the Jets could try to bring back.
Brandon Dixon (CB) — showed some potential in camp, a practice squad candidate.
A.J. Edds (LB)– very surprised by this cut as Edds had a good camp. Played well sideline to sideline and contributed on special teams. Jets took draft pick Jeremiah George instead of A.J.
Tevita Finau (DT)– victim of very good line competition.
Clyde Gates (WR)– the Jets decided to go for a youth movement at the wide receiver position.
Alex Green (RB) — with 3 quality backs already on the roster, tough to keep another.
Stephen Hill (WR)– Hill started out as a project and remains a project. A change of scenery could really help him.
Kerry Hyder (DL)– continues to improve, could be brought back.
Garrett McIntyre (LB)– very surprising move as McIntyre is a reliable player in Rex Ryan’s system. Looks like John Idzik chose his rookies over Garrett.
Rontez Miles (S)- a mild surprise as Miles had a solid camp. The Jets will try to get him on the practice squad.
Chris Pantale (TE) — continues to develop and will hopefully return to the practice squad.
Johnny Patrick (CB) — just did not show enough in camp.
Dimitri Patterson (CB)– a complete disappointment on and off the field. At this point addition by subtraction.
Brent Qvale (T)- the Jets are high on him and will try to bring back.
Jeremy Reeves (CB)– another player that could return.
Daryl Richardson (RB)– a very good player, but a luxury with 3 quality running backs ahead of him.
Caleb Schlauderaff (G)– beat out by younger players including Dakota Dozier and Dalton Freeman.
Matt Simms (QB)– Not surprised by this cut as the Jets need the roster spot for other decimated positions. Could return to practice squad.
Zach Thompson (DL)– the Jets defensive line group is a tough one to crack.
Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform (PUP)
Antwan Barnes (LB)– health continues to improve and will be a welcome addition to the pass rush when he returns.
What is next for the Jets?
I expect John Idzik and the New York Jets to be very active over the next week. Gang Green continues to have concerns at the wide receiver and cornerback positions. Idzik will explore the waiver wire and trade options to upgrade the back end of the roster.
