Tuesday belongs to Oscar-winner Paul Newman on Turner Classic Movies, and many of his fans are thrilled his films will be highlighted. The internationally acclaimed actor passed away in 2008, but his popularity continues, as well as his charitable organizations, like Newman´s Own Foundation and various other endeavors.
During Turner Classic Movies Summer Under The Stars in the month of August, a star´s films are featured each day, and Tuesday, August 19, belongs to Paul Newman. Twelve of Newman´s films will be screened with introductions during the daytime with TCM Host Ben Mankiewicz, and the evening movies hosted by veteran classic film expert and TCM Host Robert Osborne.
In an exclusive interview with actor Marvin Kaplan, who worked with Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward during the filming of “A New Kind of Love,” Kaplan revealed that he and Newman were close during the production, and he was a “very charitable man, but he was shy” in certain circumstances.
Kaplan, 87, a veteran of stage and screen with many film and television production credits from the 1950s to 2000s, appeared as Irwin in “It´s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World,” “Angels in the Outfiled” (1951), and was even the voice of Choo-Choo on “Top Cat” and Woody on ¨Johnny Bravo.” His episodic television credits include “Charlie´s Angels,” “Murder She Wrote,” ¨Cagney & Lacey,” “On the Air,” and many more.
French actor and singer Maurice Chevalier was in the production of 1963´s “A New Kind of Love¨ and Newman was scheduled to “make a small speech before the celebration” of Chevalier´s birthday party, and was so nervous and worried about the speech because he didn´t want anything to go wrong that Newman “could barely talk¨ so Kaplan gave him a few hints to help him prepare for his introduction.
Kaplan has many fond memories of working with Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, and popular character actors George Tobias and Thelma Ritter, and often dined with the stars off the set.
“Paul was such a good man,” Kaplan claims, and he supports Newman´s various charities. Kaplan still keeps in contact with Newman´s widow, Joanne Woodward.
What is one of Kaplan´s favorite channels? “I have TCM on all the time because I like to see some of my old friends.”
