North Texas Giving Day empowers the people
North Texas Giving Day is becoming a much more publicized event with activities that are offline and online in all four counties in North Texas. In 2013, 75,000 donations were made with giving totaling about $25.2 million. There will be new community events, extra time to donate and prizes for donations exceeding $25 ore more. North Texas Giving Day is September 18, 2014 and donations are made online from 6 a.m. to midnight to about 1600 different non-profits. Donations are made through the official website at www.NorthTexasGivingDay.org. Donations $25 and above will be amplified by $2 million in bonus funds and prizes. The program has just been around for five years but has pumped more than $60 million into the North Texas community. In 2013, more than 1,350 nonprofits were helped and supported through donations.
Single Mom Assistance in North Texas
There is a strong single mom presence here in North Texas and there are many wonderful organizations that help this struggling demographic escape stressors such as homelessness, childcare, job assistance, housing assistance, bill payment assistance and more. Many single parents also suffer from substance abuse, depression, domestic violence and abuse and a myriad of other social stressors while they cope with single parenthood. It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone the number of research studies and statistics that show the impacts of single parenthood on children and the effects that factors such as poverty, lack of education and lack of access to mental health care has on these families. The US Census Bureau just released their 2013 report on poverty and 30.6 percent of single mother households live in poverty. There are many organizations and too numerous to list here that do a lot of single mothers in North Texas. When you make your donations for this year’s North Texas Giving Day, consider making your donations to help single mothers combat poverty, homelessness, getting access to childcare and other services. If you make a donation or an investment in early childhood education you get a return on investment of about $7 – $10 for every dollar invested according to University of Chicago economist, James J. Heckman. It can change the future of a community.
The following list are some North Texas charities that do a tremendous amount of work for single parent families. Some you have never heard of while others are familiar names. Consider donating to these organizations during North Texas Giving Day or at any time during the year. This is not an exhaustive list of organizations since so many help single moms in North Texas.
S.M. Wright Foundation
Many single parents that are readers of the Dallas Single Mom Examiner have commented on what the S.M. Wright Foundation has done for them. The S.M. Wright Foundation has been in operation for the past 16 years. They provide support and services to provide stability to inner-city, underprivileged children and less fortunate families through hunger relief, educational support, health, social service assistance and economic empowerment. Most of the services they provide are located in South Dallas. They have a food bank, a tutoring center, and a clothing center. They also provide beds and furniture to families in need.
