A new poll shows Obama’s approval rating is taking on water, and his administration has sunk to an all-time low, at least per the voters polled in our most populous state. According to recent polling, President Barack Obama’s approval rating in California has fallen under 50 percent – the first time in almost three years. Only 45 percent of voters in California agree with the job he’s doing.
The poll was done by the Field Research Corporation and covered a two-week time span last month of 1,280 voters. The report’s summary introduction states:
There has been a sizeable decline in President Barack Obama’s job approval rating among California voters over the last few months. A statewide Field Poll completed last week found that almost as many Californians now disapprove of the job the President is doing (43%) as approve (45%).
This reading is the poorest appraisal of the job performance that Obama has received of his presidency and is in sharp contrast to the 62% favorable perception that California voters had of him at the beginning of his second term. Most of the recent decline in the President’s approval ratings has occurred among subgroups of voters who had been among Obama’s strongest supporters in prior polls.
Mark DiCamillo, director of the Field Poll, spoke of the demographics and party lines of those leaving the president’s side.
“Obama’s popularity couldn’t get much lower among Republicans, but this is his base that’s leaving him: liberals, people in the bay area and Los Angeles. And the people who typically are paying the most attention (to national affairs) are the most unhappy,” DiCamillo said.
According to the Sacramento Bee, DiCamillo said there’s “frustration in the president not getting his way in affecting policy in Washington.”
Obama’s approval ratings have been steadily falling since he was elected to his second term in 2012.
DiCamillo said that while it’s typical that approval ratings for a president in multiple terms will fluctuate because of “the accumulation of problems that a leader faces over time,” Obama hasn’t been able to recover via “any kind of rallying event that could rebound public support behind this president.”
On a national level, Obama’s approval rating is hovering at 42 percent, while his disapproval rating is 51 percent, according to Gallup.
