John Ryan’s Ocean Tempest edged out two other contenders to claim the 32 Red Casino Handicap at a wet Newmarket. Ocean Tempest won at Windsor in June and caught notice from betting tipsters for the Newmarket meeting.
Jockey Brett Doyle barely stayed ahead of Fire Ship and Jake’s Destiny to cross the finish line by a nose. Ryan said afterwards: “I was probably going too far with him over a mile and one at Yarmouth in a tricky race. I’ve always thought he was a nice horse and had been hoping to sneak him in the Britannia at Ascot. Winning on soft ground definitely gives us more options.”
Also on Saturday, Ryan Moore claimed the top jockey title when Hasopop (7-2) pulled ahead of Godolphin’s 1-4 favourite Bircham in the Rossdales EBF Conditions Stakes. Hasopop crossed the line in front by seven lengths. The horserace featured only three sprinters due to wet conditions at the course.
In other news, Tattersalls reported over the weekend that its July Sale concluded with the Juddmonte filly Swerve topped the day’s proceedings at 80,000 guineas. A total of 118 lots sold for a total of 1,470,500 guineas.
According to Tattersalls, the three day sale saw a total of 402 lots sold for 4,745,400 guineas, at an average of 11,804 guineas, and a median of 6,500 guineas.
