In case you haven’t heard the news, it’s time to get your polka on! According to an ABC News report published Sept. 20, one of the most anticipated international events of the year is here and people are ready to celebrate. If you’re in the mood for delicious food, ice-cold beer, friendly competitions, colorful parades and live entertainment, the world’s largest fair begins today, Sept. 20, 2014. Oktoberfest 2014 is finally here!
Celebrated around the world, Oktoberfest is an annual festival that has been celebrated since the 1800s. Until 1872, Oktoberfest was celebrated in October but was moved to the month of September to avoid the dreary October weather. If you are looking for some authentic German food, great beer and plenty of family-friendly entertainment, grab your lederhosen and feathered hats and visit one of the Oktoberfest festivals listed below.
Oktoberfest 2014 Events
Munich Oktoberfest – Touted as the “largest public festival in the world,” nearly six million people attend the event every year. It is estimated that more than 1 million gallons of beer will be enjoyed during the 16-day celebration. For those who can’t attend in person, you can still watch the Ferris Wheel, beer tents and other activities in action via the live web cams. The 2014 Munich event will run from September 20 through Oct. 5, 2014.
Oktoberfest Zinzinnati – 600,000 people are expected to attend the festival in downtown Cincinnati this year. Oktoberfest Zinzinnati is the largest Oktoberfest in America . If you are in the area, be sure to stop by and check out the six blocks of fabulous entertainment. There will be over 1,300 barrels of beer, seven stages featuring live entertainment and 30 food vendors servin’ up about 200 dishes. This fest takes place from Sept. 19 – Sept. 21, 2014. And whatever you do – be sure to check out the “World’s Largest Chicken Dance” event which takes place at 4:00 EDT on Sept. 20.
Addison Oktoberfest – Touted as the “most authentic Oktoberfest outside of Munich,” this annual fest takes place from Sept. 18 – Sept. 21, 2014. More than 70,000 people are expected to attend the event, which takes place in Addison Circle Park in Addison, TX. Stop by for authentic German food, polka and folk dancing, kids entertainment and more.
Vegan Oktoberfest – The world’s First Vegan Oktoberfest is also taking place this year in Santa Monica, CA. If you enjoy a meat-free diet, check out the delicious vegan dishes served by local restaurants and some refreshing vegan craft beer. Enjoy a taste of Germany in sunny California. Plus, a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Expand Animal Rights Now organization. The event takes place on Oct. 4, 2014.
NYC Blocktoberfest – Brooklyn is also celebrating Oktoberfest with their Blocktoberfest event. If you like beer – check out the 5,000 square feet indoor beer garden. There will be a special VIP event from 12:30 – 1:30 where thirsty guests can meet brewers and enjoy a beer tasting event. The general session takes place from 1:30 – 5:30 on Sept. 20 2014.
