Did you ever dream of being able to fly to Germany and see some of the old world Christmas markets that are a staple during the holiday season but you just don’t have the money? Well, now you don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars on a plane ticket to have a traditional old World German Christmas experience. All you have to do is take a 2 hour drive to Harmony, Pennsylvania to attend their annual WeihnachtsMarkt being held on Saturday, November 8 and Sunday, November 9.
Harmony Museum’s WeihnachtsMarkt Located 30 miles north of Pittsburgh in the National Historic Landmark town of Harmony, the WeihnachtsMarkt is an indoor/outdoor German-style Christmas Market that brings German history and traditions to life for visitors and has been rated “The Best in the Burg.”
The Market features over 40 artisans and specialty vendors displaying their handcrafted wares for sale. Visitors will be able to purchase authentic German gifts, toys, (including handmade dolls), jewelry, furniture, handmade soaps and lotions, wood carvings, stained glass items, linens, German-style tatting, knitted and woven goods, clocks, pottery and locally forged iron ware, just to name some of the merchandise. Holiday wares include greeting cards, ornaments, smokers and nutcrackers.

Also being offered are horse-drawn carriage rides around the National Historic Landmark district of Harmony.
WeihnachtsMarkt will feature lots of live entertainment including German music and singers and dancers in addition to hammered dulcimer music.
German food will be plentiful offering a taste of the “old country” including bratwurst and sauerbraten sandwiches, German potato salad and baked goods. And don’t miss the wine tasting provided by a local winery.
Visitors will also get the chance to learn a little about the history of Harmony and the German Separatists who came to the town 200 years ago seeking religious freedom and the Mennonite Germans that followed them by taking a free self-guided tour through the Harmony Museum.
A highlight of the WeihnachtsMarkt will be the lighting of a live Christmas tree at nightfall on Saturday evening. Visitors can join in in caroling around the tree as it is lit. The tree serves as the Museum’s Giving Tree.
Hours for the WeihnachtsMarkt are 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. on Saturday, November 8 and 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Sunday, November 9. Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for seniors and $3 for students. Children 6 and under are free. Admission includes all-day access to the market, wagon rides, museum tours and entertainment.
