A sexy category romance novella from Entangled’s Brazen imprint…
When it comes to sex, good girl Skyler Thompson always plays it safe, choosing stable and sedate over wild and thrilling. She doesn’t do one-night-stands, but one look at sinfully sexy Gage Holt and she’s willing to reconsider. He makes her want to be bad for once in her life, and she’s prepared to take what she wants.
Danger follows former MMA fighter Gage Holt like a shadow. Despite his successes as part owner of Sin, an exclusive nightclub in Boston, Gage can’t risk getting involved with a woman, especially one as sweet as Skyler. Still, he can’t resist a taste—and it’s so damn good he has to see her again.
As addicted as he is to her, Gage knows there’s no future for him and Skyler—not with his past lurking in the dark corners of an MMA cage. But Skyler’s tougher than she looks, and she’s ready to fight for her man.
I’m not crazy about novellas. I usually don’t go for the shorter works because I feel like it’s not enough time or space to really tell a story. I much prefer the longer format. However, this novella really surprised me in that it was a full, complete novel in a shorter format. Usually I end up feeling short changed, like the author cut out important subplots in order to stick to the shorter format, but not so with this book. The characters were well-developed and so was the plot, and it delivered all of the emotional punch of a full-length novel while granting the reader the ending they feel the couple should get. With writing like this, I could actually come to like the shorter format!
Let’s talk about Gage. Oh, my gosh, Gage! He puts the ‘A’ in alpha and makes you wish he were a real person. The way he tries to first put off Skyler, then protect her from himself – his past, his world – is just breathtaking. He’s a good brother even though his brother doesn’t deserve it, loyal to the end and a wonderful friend to the guys he co-owns a club with. But he’s not really arrogant or full of himself, which is a refreshing change. He just knows what he wants and isn’t ashamed to admit – or go after it.
Skyler is the perfect foil for him. An admitted ‘good girl’ who wants a taste of the wild, she also isn’t afraid to go after what she wants and what she wants is Gage. The singular determination with which she pursues him is something to see, but through it all, she somehow manages to maintain her good girl image and her general goodness. In college pursuing a degree in psychology, she never tries to analyze Gage. She just tries to be there for him, hoping he will open up to her, but never really stepping over the line into nagging territory. She is, simply, just what Gage needs. Too bad it takes the stubborn guy awhile to realize that.
This was a quick read, but, oh, what a good one!
