From Sri Lanka to Australia and throughout the great United States, candles will be lit on Thursday, September 25th, the fourth Thursday in September, as people globally join in on the Remember Me Thursday global awareness campaign. The campaign was established last year by Mike Arms, President of the Helen Woodward Animal Center (HWAC) in order for the world to stand up and take note of the millions of animals that needlessly lose their lives each year without the benefit of a loving, forever home.
HWAC, a private, non-profit animal rescue organization believes that “people help animals and animals help people” so they continue to derive events such as this one to teach the world about their beliefs. This fine organization was founded in 1972 in Rancho Santa Fe, California and has made quite a name for themselves. They not only rescue animals but they give them strict medical attention so that they can be adopted. They also provide people with educational and therapeutic programs that will not only benefit them, but the orphaned animals as well. Because of their heartfelt dedication, the Center provides services for more than 57,000 people and thousands of animals annually.
Besides this global campaign to remember orphaned animals, HWAC is also the creator of the international Blue Buffalo Home 4 the Holidays pet adoption drive and The Business of Saving Lives Workshops which teach the business of saving lives to animal welfare leaders from around the world.
Thanks to their great partners like the Blue Buffalo Company, located in Wilton, Connecticut, Helen Woodward and crew are able to offer large pet adoption drives. The Center recommends Blue Buffalo’s pet food as they are our nation’s leading pet food company. They provide a complete line of healthy and holistic natural foods and treats for both dogs and cats and their products are sold nationwide.
Another great partner is Embrace Pet Insurance, a specialist insurance company focused on changing the pet insurance industry. They provide flexible dog and cat health insurance products. Embrace removes the need to choose between necessary, yet costly, medical care versus the life of your beloved pet. This privately owned, Ohio-based company is one of the most highly rated pet insurance companies in the industry.
The first Remember Me Thursday took place on the fourth Thursday in September, 2013. Moved by the staggering statistics of homeless pets who lose their lives each year (The Humane Society of the United States approximates this number at 3.4 million annually in the US.), Helen Woodward Animal Center President Mike Arms put out a call to rescue organizations in an attempt to create a global awareness campaign. As creator of both the International Pet Adopt-a-thon and the International Home 4 the Holidays program, Arms was able to send out an expansive request and the response was significant. Last year, 139 countries united to support the movement, with over 100,000 individuals around the globe holding candle-lighting ceremonies of their own, spreading the message through social media, visiting the Remember Me Thursday website or lighting a virtual candle. Celebrity support arrived in the form of impactful social media posts and re-tweets.
Now in its second year, the Remember Me Thursday campaign is only growing in support with an even larger number of candle-lighting ceremonies and special events being organized internationally. For those who can’t attend an event, there are still ways to get involved. Animal-lovers are encouraged to light a virtual candle on-line at www.remembermethursday.org; change their Facebook profile pictures to the Remember Me Thursday icon all day, September 25th; spread the word about Remember Me Thursday on Facebook, Twitter and other social media channels using #LIGHTFORPETS; and most importantly always adopt and encourage friends and family to do the same.
