Well the Fall 2014 TV season is officially a month old even though some shows have only been on once. And I guess it’s safe to come out from under the covers now that the closing credits of FX’s “American Horror Story: Freak Show” are rolling. About a freak carny, again starring Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Michael Chiklis, Evan Peters, Emma Roberts, Frances Conroy, and Denis O’Hare.
Some of the highlights on “Freakshow” include Sarah Paulson as a singer who’s a two headed conjoined twin, and Kathy Bates as the aging bearded lady. And Angela Bassett as a three-breasted wonder with a male ding-a-ling….ding-dong….sorry thats how she describes it. And lets not forget an important cast member, a killer clown! This season to say the least is very scarey as well as bloody.
Theres a couple of lovey dovey shows….Theres A to Z..on NBC. A romantic predictable comedy which will probably wrap by the holidays because theres not a strong enough hook because both characters are insecure and not exactly Elvis and Ann Margret. Anyway A-Z sums up whats involved in a new romance from beginning to end. Ben Feldman from “Mad Men” stars as Andrew, a true romantic who believes in destiny and romance, Cristin Milioti, from CBS “Met Your Mother” plays the object of his affection, Zelda. In other words A to Z, got it? Good!
Also on NBC theres…ah.. yikes…”Marry Me”…which luckily gets to use the unused scripts from last springs cancelled..”Undateable”…and “Up All Night” anyway this romp-a-com about a couple played by Ken Marino and sacked SNL player cutey Casey Wilson. Who’s character is very loud and hyper, which why they can’t get the marriage proposal right and is why all their doing is proving that they aren’t supposed to be together. And not only not getting close to tying the knot, their uncomfortable to watch. While not giving us much of a valid reason not to switch the channel.
But theres a saving grace, going to premium channel to watch…. to see…Showtimes “The Affair”, which involves a cheating relationship. “The Affair” gets busy running their story lines from alternating male and female perspectives. Set up the way from the “Revenge” bunch out in the Hamptons, the series stars sleazy Dominic West and the slutty Ruth Wilson as the cheaters and the mousy Maura Tierney and Joshua Jackson as the cheatees. A really excellent cast, for this questionably immoral storyline.
Speaking of which…theres ABC’s….How to Get Away With Murder…by Shonda Rhimes…this legally larger than life thriller, which stars a tough death-penalty law school professor played by Viola Davis. With sharp students kissing her legal briefs for her approval and a spot at her prestigious law firm. But of course their biggest task is experienced outside the classroom, when they get caught up in a murder plot and, of course, must find a way how to get away with it. Talk about some dramatic Scandal-sized twists!
In “Madam Secretary” on CBS, former CIA agent played by Tea Leoni is asked to take on the role of Secretary of State. By her former boss, now the president of the United States played by Keith Carradine, anyway she shakes things up in Washington, D.C. while also balancing her home life as a wife and a mother. Also starring in “Madam Secretary” include Tim Daly and Bebe Neuwirth .
The Networks so far seem satisfied with their on-air TV show choices but time will tell.
