Our favorite local hang out for dinner in Palmetto (Terra Ceia) Florida is the Sea Hut family restaurant!
Enticing and delicious family recipes, weekly specials, made with mostly local high-quality ingredients. You typically don’t wait long for your dinner! Food is fresh, beautiful on the plate, and the perfect eating temperature! How much better can it get?
It’s my pleasure to present this review (with photos) since we have enjoyed so many scrumptious and delightful meals at Sea Hut.
Being one who is always interested in healthy eating options I was also pleasantly surprised to find the following statement on the Sea Hut menu: “RICE BRAN OIL: Is used for all our frying it’s “the world’s healthiest” edible oil. A trans fat-free oil, it contains vitamins, antioxidants and nutrients. Delicate and flavorful, it can help lower cholesterol, fight diseases & enhance the immune system.” While I don’t eat many fried foods, now I can have Sea Hut’s french fries occasionally and not feel too guilty! Speaking of their french fries, ask for them “crispy” – we’ve not had any like these! aWEsOMe!
Over the course of several months we’ve tried nearly every weekly special item. If some people think a few items are expensive, believe me it’s worth it to have a high-quality dining experience like this. You get what you pay for and we think Sea Hut provides a lot of value for your money. The owner and staff source the seafood they serve. They support local farms as much as they can and we can taste the difference!
Everything we’ve tried has been delectably aWEsOMe! In particular we love the open-faced seafood quesadilla – so mouthwatering! It is really called the Combo Quesadilla on the menu – we get crab and shrimp. It’s the only “pizza” we’ve had since moving to this area. My husband and I give the Sea Hut two thumbs way up – yummy!! Additionally, you can – we always do – ask for the optional “light” version of sliced jalapeños added to the quesadilla, which brings it up a notch… just the right amount of heat in our opinion.
We often have their fantastic Caeser salad, with or without a shared appetizer. Other items we’ve had:
- The Seafood Sampler and with a salad it’s filling enough for two to share.
- The Baked Crab Dip and Salmon Spread are both rich and tasty.
- The Frog Legs are lightly battered, each leg is HUGE, and delicately seasoned.
- Their Old Bay boiled Peel-n-Eat Shrimp are also quite large and great-tasting.
- The Lobster Bisque is so creamy that if you’re dieting at all you will only want a few bites!
- The Grouper fish dinner / sandwich /bites have also been superb, along with special fish they offer at times like the Amberjack.
- My hubby and I have also shared the Sea Hut Burger on a few occasions – it’s big, juicy, and enough to share!
Each week the specials menu changes… we cherish variety so we love it!
The Sea Hut (previously known as Crab Trap 1) offers a fine full bar to accompany your meals. We recommend the California red zinfandel Ravenswood brand wine or the Viking potato vodka (for those of you who prefer martini’s).
We have had almost all of our family there over the past few months, and some friends too! (smile!) We’re not the only ones who love Sea Hut – many locals join us there.
Parking is free and right out front – they are adding some extra too! Sea Hut is on road frontage property along US highway 19, just south of the Skyway bridge. If you’re heading south from St. Petersburg, FL take exit 5 after the Skyway and stay on US highway 19 towards Palmetto. The Sea Hut is just after the Terra Ceia short low bridge.
Bottom line: Friendly and loyal staff – chef Mike, chef and manager John, barkeep Donna, her mom Mary (serves), and daughter Mercedis (hostess) love what they do, offer reasonable prices, in a relaxed casual Old Florida atmosphere. We love their weekly specials, along with so many of their family recipes (from the Chesapeake Bay Maryland area). We will continue to hang at Sea Hut as long as we’re in this area.
Oh and if you see us… a white haired guy in a tie-dye t-shirt and me, a tall gal with graying curly hair… be sure and introduce yourself – we’d love to chat!

Grouper Reuben sandwich
Beautifully grilled Grouper Reuben sandwich. Believe it was on the Specials menu one week. I had the perfectly done asparagus with it as my side. Sensational!
Outside real crabs
After your dinner don’t forget to step out onto the backyard deck at the Sea Hut and enjoy the water view and real live scampering crabs… they like to crawl up so watch your back if you lean on anything else you might get a visit! Haha!
Sea Hut Amberjack fish
My husband ordered the Amberjack weekly special awhile back and said it was flavorful, tendy, and flaky. A real filling serving along with his two sides (not pictured).
Sweet Potato cheesecake
This is the most delicious sweet potato cheesecake around! It was so good that many Sea Hut employees paid full price in order to get a slice for themselves! There’s a word for how good this is but I probably shouldn’t say it! Haha, well, okay you talked me into it… it’s orgasmic. It’s a special so whenever you see it on the menu – order it.
Scallops on rice
These scallops were finely prepared with a light yet rich, slightly sweet mouthwatering sauce which balanced all the flavors and textures quite nicely. You’ll also have two sides, many to choose from!
Sea Hut Fried trout
My husband was delighted with the size of this trout serving! Also it was flaky, light, everything you love about trout. He got his favorites, baby lima beans and okra as his two sides.
