A married couple from Spartanburg, South Carolina was arrested and charged with child neglect after one of their 10 children called police to report that she’d been assaulted by her dad. When Spartanburg County Deputies responded to the couple’s Old Lowe Road to follow up on that complaint on the afternoon of June 28, they found ten children alone and unsupervised in the home.
The kids ranged in ages from one through 15. It was the 15-year-old daughter who went to a neighbor’s home and called police to report the assault, according to WSPA.
The young girl told the responding officers that her father twisted her arm behind her back in an attempt to get a cell phone away from her. When the girl led the deputies to her home, “the parents, Andrej and Natalia Sokil, were nowhere to be found. “
While going through the house, deputies found, in addition to the 15-year-old girl that called them originally, a one-year-old girl, two-year-old boy, four-year-old boy, six -year-old boy, seven- year-old girl, nine-year-old boy, 11-year-old boy, 12-year-old boy and a 14-year-old boy. The kids told the deputies that whenever the parents were away, it was up to the two oldest children to watch the rest of them.
The deputies reported that the home had electricity and running water and had food available, but little else except for the ten young children. There was no air conditioning in the house. Deputies also found “bugs throughout the home. The deputy then located a one year old in a crib with bugs flying around it.”
The kids told the deputies that most of them slept in the attic. When deputies inspected the attic, they found only a few mattresses and dressers. Deputies said that it looked as if all the kids slept in either the attic or a utility closet with little or no furniture. Also according to the deputies’ report, “Some of children had bruises, a black eye, and sores on their bodies.”

Police contacted Emergency Medical Services to evaluate the children’s injuries. The Department of Social Services was called to take emergency custody of all ten children. When the parents arrived back at their home, the father was arrested Friday evening. The mother was taken into custody Saturday morning.
Seven of the children were taken to DSS and the three children with injuries and sores were taken to the hospital for observation.
Both parents were charged with three counts of Neglect of a Child or Helpless Person. By early Saturday morning, both parents were released from the Spartanburg County Detention Center on $15,000 bonds each, according to FOX Carolina.
