Ever have that favorite pair of jeans that can’t be worn again because of one little (or big) tear? Maybe you want to patch them but don’t know how. Sick of patches falling off? Want to add a decorative touch to old jeans? Maybe your kid’s just constantly wearing the knees out of pants. Well, here’s an easy way to put a decorative or reinforcing patch on jeans without taking them to a seamstress.
Easy reinforcement patch for jeans
Iron on denim patching can be purchased at a fabric or craft store. They’re usually sold in a pack of 3 for less than 5.00. If reinforcement is the goal, two will be needed for each hole or tear.
*Lay the damaged portion of the jeans out on an ironing board. Cut away any threads hanging loose from the hole in the jeans.
*Slip one reinforcement patch inside the jeans, centered under the hole with adhesive side up.
*Place the other patch adhesive side down on the outside of the pants, directly over and lined up with the patch underneath.
*Iron the two reinforcement patches together using heat settings recommended on the patch package.
You’re not done yet.
In order to insure that the patch doesn’t curl up on the corners when the adhesive wears out, it’ll be necessary to do some sewing. Set the sewing machine to a zig-zag stitch. Sew around the outline of the patches to hold them together and in place.
Note: This same method may be used when jeans are first purchased. Simply center the patches on the knees of the jeans, rather than on a hole. This patch job will keep pants from wearing out quickly from work or play.
Using a decorative jeans patch for repair purposes
Once again lay the jeans out on the ironing board to show the damage. This time the inside and outside patches are cut to fit over the hole with about an extra ¼ inch bordering it. Iron and sew the reinforcement patches together as was done above.
The decorative jeans patch will be placed over the reinforcing jeans patch so that the reinforcing and stitches don’t show. Use a bit of fabric glue to hold the decorative patch on temporarily. To stitch on the decorative jeans patch use either the zig zag stitch, another machine stitch or a hand stitch, depending on the effect desired.
Artistic patching and trim
For an artistic touch to the decorative jeans, you may wish to add buttons, lace or trim. This can be done by sewing decorative items on randomly or around the edges of the patches, whichever is preferred. To insure a uniform look, matching decorative patch, buttons lace or trim may be added in other areas of the pants.
