With high scratch and handicap series scores of 737 and 799, respectively, Jeff Pennell teamed with Chuck Souzer for the top prize of $160 in the first Bobby Combs Century Doubles Tournament of the season, conducted on Sunday (Sept. 21) at Sarasota Lanes.
Pennell’s high series included a 268 game, and Souzer added a handicap series of 701 to provide the victorious tandem with a net score of 1,500.
The runner-up position went to Alan Blades and Daryl Shinn, who had respective handicap series of 684 and 773 for a 1,457 total, while Nellie Ralston and Kenny Combs finished third with 1,440.
Robert Yoder and Jim Ord claimed the No. 4 prize-list position with 1,419, while two teams — Terri Thomas-Kevin Hoeppner and Rocco Capozzi-Carl Sawyer Jr. — tied for fifth with 1,411.
Rounding out the list of cashers were: John Hoppe and Sue Olsen (1,399), Maynard Hamilton and Richard McLaughlin (1,398), Frank Mang and Brad Mang (1,398), Janet Romig and Chuck Warner (1,386); and Wendy Perna and Chris Christmas (1,383).
Chris Christmas and Cindy Grich win Alibi Doubles
Chris Christmas and Cindy Grich emerged victorious in the optional Alibi Doubles competition, with a net score of 1,436 on respective handicap totals of 698 and 738.
Pennell shared the runner-up spot with two of his Alibi partners — Anna Thristino and Ed Ver Vane — who each had a handicap series of 734 which, coupled with Pennell’s 799, resulted in 1,433 totals.
John Thompson and Grich were fourth with 1,417, while the teams of Larry Butler-Chris Christmas and Daryl Shinn-Darlene Tolbert tied for the No. 5 position at 1,411. Others on the Alibi cash list were: Mike Romig and Grich (1,387), Butler and Kent Wagner (1,387), and Linda Cook and Hoeppner (1,382).
Sharing tournament high-game honors with Pennell was Craig Ripley, with a 268 en route to a 700 series, while McLaughlin posted a 723 scratch set. Among women, high games were turned in by Beth Owen-Cipielewski with 255 and Janet Romig with 228.
The event drew 56 regular doubles teams and 64 Alibi entries, and three more Century Doubles tourneys are scheduled for the 2013-2014 season, and they will be held at 2 p.m. on the following dates: Dec. 7 at AMF Bradenton Lanes; March 15 at AMF Gulf Gate Lanes; and May 3 at Treasure Lanes in Port Charlotte.
