Following Monday’s Supreme Court decision, pro-life organizations were swift to applaud the action of the court. Below are some of the statements issued.
This is a landmark decision for religious freedom. The Supreme Court recognized that Americans do not lose their religious freedom when they run a family business. This ruling will protect people of all faiths. The Court’s reasoning was clear, and it should have been clear to the government. You can’t argue there are no alternative means when your agency is busy creating alternative means for other people.
Lori Windham, Senior Counsel for The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty and counsel for Hobby Lobby
Today’s decision is a victory for common-sense as pro-life Americans do not lose their First Amendment freedoms when they open a family business or when they value unborn life. These cases underscore the critical need for laws protecting Americans’ freedom of conscience. The anti-life mandate the Obama Administration tried to impose on these families is evidence of Big Abortion’s manipulative agenda, as they move from choice to coercion.

Today we celebrate freedom; we celebrate this ruling handed down by the Supreme Court in favor of religious freedom. SCOTUS has given us hope today as they upheld the rights of Americans to be free from the tyranny and oppression of our government when it comes to our faith.
The Obama administration tried to force Hobby Lobby’s owners to violate their consciences and faith with the HHS mandate, an intrinsic evil that would force Americans to pay for abortion causing drugs. We at Stand True and Priests for Life celebrate the Court’s affirmation of Hobby Lobby’s religious rights and patiently await a ruling in our case.
Father Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life
I applaud the Supreme Court for ruling in favor of private companies and their owners to exercise their freedom of religion. No person or entity should be forced to provide baby-killing drugs to their employees. My hope and prayer is that our government will take further steps to stop the on-going killing of unborn children. Let’s return to a country that genuinely abides by its own Declaration of Independence and protects the right to live for every American human being.

We thank the courageous Hahn and Green families for standing strong. They have had to endure the abuse of the radical abortion lobby and others who say they respect diversity but, in fact, endorse and impose conformity. Their message that women want free abortifacient drugs – and that they value these drugs above religious liberty – is demeaning to all American women and will be rejected by voters nationwide this fall. Americans of faith and conscience have been vindicated and this will be a galvanizing moment for the vast majority of citizens who vehemently objected to this mandate and the elected leaders who thrust it upon us.
Marjorie Dannenfeiser, President, Susan B. Anthony List
We are especially thankful that the Court saw right through the Obama Administration’s false claim to be working on behalf of all women with this unconstitutional mandate. As our brief to the Court said: “No one person, and certainly not the Government, speaks for the interests of all women, and the Mandate cannot be generalized as a measure that advances the interests of all women.
Penny Nance, CEO and President, Concerned Women for America
These families’ stand for freedom benefits the many faith-based businesses faced with the same awful choice of deciding between their faith and livelihood. It also vindicates a higher principle, showing that government must tread carefully when it seeks to impose policies contrary to our most cherished rights.
Religious groups and business owners should not have to violate their faith in order to follow the law. It’s not the role of government to define what we believe or what our faith includes.
