Forecast discussion: Although I had predicted the risk of showers and thunderstorms by the late afternoon, it took a little longer for the cold front to reach Providence. By 6 p.m., thunderstorms along a cold front reached Boston, MA. As we move through the overnight, Rhode Island will continue to see scattered showers and thunderstorms. Some thunderstorms may still have some gusty winds and some lightning. However, I am not expecting any severe weather. In fact, the Severe Thunderstorm Watch ended at 9 p.m.
By Sunday morning, we will still see lingering showers into the late morning. By then, the cold front will be offshore, and a strong high pressure ridge will move over New England. We will feel drier air, as our dewpoint temperatures will in the upper 40’s and lower 50’s. Also, with easterly winds, temperatures will only reach the upper 70’s. We will see cooler temperatures on Monday despite sunshine, reaching the lower 70’s.
As we enter Tuesday, the computer models are indicating that a weak low over southern Georgia will move up into the Mid-Atlantic, and provide us with the risk for some showers by the morning. There may be a passing shower during the overnight, before a weak high pressure ridge brings us limited sunshine by the afternoon by Wednesday.
The ridge will hold off a new frontal boundary reaching Southern New England on Thursday, but we will see another round of showers and light rain through most of Friday. The front will move offshore by Saturday morning, with showers coming to an end by the early afternoon. We will also see the coolest air to date, as high temperatures will struggle to reach the lower 70’s.
