It’s time for fall family fun in Central Virginia. Whether your family enjoys pumpkin patches, corn mazes or apple festivals, the months of September and October are filled with fall family fun.
Here’s a guide to local pumpkin patches, corn mazes and apple orchards in central Virginia, all within about an hour of Lynchburg. Find information about family-friendly local activities at the Lynchburg Macaroni Kid website.
Smith’s Pumpkin Patch, located at 6204 Fort Avenue, is open for the season daily from Sept. 19 through Oct. 31. Adults and kids 1 year old and younger are admitted free. Kids can enjoy all-day fun and season passes are also available. The play area at Smith’s includes the castle bounce house, the chaos obstacle course, the jungle bounce, Noah’s Ark, teepee and the titanic slide. New this season at Smith’s are the giant tunnel maze, cornhole and a humongous corn box. Kids can paint their own pumpkin. Visit Smith’s from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Ravenelle Corn Maze at Russell Farms is located in the 4300 block of Thomas Jefferson Road in Forest. In addition to the corn maze, Russell Farms offers a pumpkin patch and bounce houses. The corn maze is open weekends from Sept. 27 through Oct. 26. Hours are Saturdays from 10-6 and Sundays from 1-6.
Layman Family Farm Maze and Pumpkin Patch is located at 1815 Mountain View Church Road in Blue Ridge. Layman’s is open for the season from Sept. 13 through Nov. 9. In addition to the corn maze, hay ride, corn crib, tunnel slide, corn snake, mini maze and animal alley. Use Layman Tokens to enjoy other special attractions on the farm. During September, Layman’s is open Saturdays from 10-8 and Sundays from 11-6. In October, enjoy Flash Light Maze Nights on Wednesdays from 6-9 p.m., Haunted Harvest on Friday and Saturday nights from 8-11 p.m. October corn maze hours are Saturdays from 10-7:30 and Sundays from 11-6. November hours are Saturdays from 10-8 and Sundays from 11-5. Admission is free for kids under age 2, $8 for ages 2-11, $10 for ages 12 and up. October admission is $1 more per person and season passes are available.
Jeter Farm is located at 181 Blue Ridge Boulevard in Roanoke. Jeter Farm is open for the season on weekends from Sept. 27 through Oct. 26. Jeter Farm offers a corn maze, pumpkin patch, hayride, pony rides and more. Hours are Fridays from 3-6, Saturdays from 9-6 and Sundays from 12-6.
White Fall Farm, located at 6001 Riceville Road in Gretna, is open weekends from Sept. 27 through Nov. 2. Saturday hours are 9-7 and Sunday hours are 3-7. The farm offers pick-your-own pumpkins, pumpkin painting, mazes, hayrides, castle, bonfires, farm animals, the Pumpkin Hunt and more. Pack a picnic lunch or visit the concession stand. Cash and checks only so plan ahead.
Johnson’s Orchards, located at 2122 Sheep Creek Road in Bedford, is open daily from noon to 5 p.m. into mid-December. In addition to apples, you’ll find cider, pumpkins and farm animals. There’s also find a big selection of wines at Peaks of Otter Winery next door with free tastings each weekend.
Morris Orchard, located at 226 Tobacco Row Lane in Monroe, has been a local favorite for many years. The orchard is open for the fall season from early September until late December. Morris Orchard offers pick-your-own apples, cider, pumpkins and gourds. The orchard also has hay creations for kids to climb. Morris is open Monday-Saturday from 9-5.
Drumheller’s Orchard, located at 1130 Drumheller Orchard Lane in Lovingston, is open daily for the season. In addition to apples, Drumhellers will hold two apples festivals this fall, on Sept. 27-28 and Oct. 18-19. The festivals feature hayrides, a pumpkin patch, corn maze, games for the kids, arts and crafts, music and more. Festival weekend hours are 9-5 on Saturday and Sunday. Drumhellers is open Monday through Saturday from 9-5 and 12-5 on Sundays.
Saunders Brothers Orchard and Farm Market, located at 2717 Tye Brook Highway in Piney River, is open Monday through Saturday from 9-5 through mid-November. You’ll find apples and more at the orchard and market every day. There are special events each Saturday from mid-September through mid-December, including Harvest Day with Farm Animals on Sept. 27, Autumn Apple Fun on Oct. 4, Apple Butter Demonstration on Nov. 8 and a Visit with Santa on Dec. 13.
Silver Creek & Seamans’ Orchard, located at 5529 Crabtree Falls Highway in Tyro, is open daily for the season through Nov. 2 and open Monday-Friday after Nov. 2. Special events include pick-your-own apples at Silver Creek on Sept. 13-14 and Oct. 11-12, pick-your-own apples at Seamans’ on Sept. 20-21, apple butter festivals on Oct. 4 and 18, and pick-your-own pumpkins Oct. 4-31.
