From platinum to purple, there is hair color technology that can [almost] take any person’s hair to any hair color. And while most “regular” people keep things at least human-looking (black, brown, blonde,) celebrities often prefer to stand out, looking brighter, more unique, more… in-your-face. This year has brought in some hair color trends that achieve exactly that. And while many of us have stories of extreme hair colors or styles we attempted at some point, most of us have never gone to this level.
Here, we take a look at the most popular- and least favorite- hair color trends of the year. From a fairly natural-looking red shade all the way to green (yes, that was green,) here are this year’s wildest hair color trends- for better or worse.

We kick things off with one of the more popular tones, purple. Nicole Richie had her hair dyed a light, lavender-ish purple tone quite a while ago, and since then many others have followed suit, including Kelly Osbourne. With such an unnatural shade of hair, one is almost left with a strange choice to make. Either balance your strong hair color with natural makeup and beautiful but calm clothing, a la Nicole, or go all out like Kelly and allow your entire fashion sense and image to be as extreme as your hair. When your hair is the blaring star, you should either go with balance or rebellion.
One of the more tame color trends of the year, due to its very natural appearance, is what stylists are currently calling “rose gold.” This is actually not a “new” or even that wild of a color trend, but it is very popular, and once stylists have come up with a new name for something, it shall be “new” once again. Right?
This rose gold color is actually a natural-looking, reddish shade that is not light enough to be reddish-blonde, but not dark enough to be auburn. Last year, Jessica Chastain’s hair color was an unnatural, super-bright shade of red. This year, it’s been toned down a bit to this rose gold shade. Emma Stone, who has worn virtually every hair color shade known to man, is currently sporting it, as is Rachel McAdams- another incredibly versatile celebrity when it comes to hair colors. This rose gold trend is one of our favorites, as it is beautiful and not too weird, but is still very striking.
Blue has made an appearance, most notably on the head of Kylie Jenner. The Keeping Up with the Kardashians star- and new author- had an ombre [dark roots and mid-strands, with blonde from mid-strand to ends] for a short time before she tinted the blonde pieces to a bright royal blue shade. And while it sounds very punk, it actually works quite well. Because half of her hair is still it’s natural dark brown, the blue doesn’t take over her whole face or image. It looks fun and youthful, but not overly crazy. Definitely one of the best “wild” colors of the year.
Now, to one of the worst colors… when it comes to hair at least. Green. When you hear “green hair” you may think of girls who swim and it turns their blonde hairs a strange shade of green. But Katy Perry turned her hair green on purpose. And it’s not great. Of course, she’s an artist, and likes to play with her look. Most of what she’s done has worked for that exact reason. But green, on hair, just looks… wrong. It simply does not look like a hair color, it looks like a problem or some sort of mistake.
Of course we must mention platinum. Gwen Stefani has long been a platinum blonde, and Miley Cyrus’ hair has been platinum since she cut it into a sharp faux hawk. Platinum blonde can be tricky, because it doesn’t necessarily work on every skin tone. But when it does, it works beautifully. It is strong and still feminine, extreme but still wearable. Another favorite.
As we check out this year’s wild hair color trends, it becomes clear that if these stars are afraid, they certainly don’t show it. Which is great for the rest of us, who don’t usually go for such extreme options. Unless we do… and if so, more power to you!
