The word quarantine comes from a simpler time when there were less doctors and lawyers. During the scourge of the black plague ships entering a harbor had to stay isolated in the harbor for a quaranta giorni or forty days in Italian. Quarantine was used successfully in 1872 Boston for Small Pox, 1905 in New Orleans for yellow fever, Twice Typhoid Mary was sent to North Brother Island in New York and in 1924 Los Angeles stopped both bubonic and pneumonic plague in 1924.
Despite the success of quarantine throughout history we are getting mixed signals from the federal government, CDC and even the infected themselves. When the incompetence of the CDC was on display in Texas they claimed it is a states responsibility. (CDC buck passing) As several African countries struggled with quarantine to stop the spread of Ebola our president refuses to restrict travel from infected countries and even scrapped regulations that would have helped in 2010. (Give us your sick) To make matters worse the administration is planning on welcoming those already infected, citizens or not. (Spreading the wealth) Then we have the doctor and nurse in New York that both ignored and refused to be inconvenienced by quarantine.
When the states of New York and New Jersey in a bipartisan effort to follow CDC guidelines of states’ rights they were admonished by the president. (NY & NJ) Why the reluctance of those in power to implement what would seem to be common sense solutions? Do they have information we are not privy to, or are their plans different than what we would suppose? Who are they getting guidance from?
A terrifying though is that Obama might be relying on advice from his trusted Science and Technology advisor John P. Holden. Besides being a disciple of the Al Gore theory of personal enrichment and global warming, he believes in the teachings of economist Thomas Malthus. Not benefiting from a Harvard education whom is Malthus you might ask. Malthus proposed overpopulation is the root of all evil in the world. His solution was to keep the population at an acceptable level and if mass starvation was not palatable then let nature take its course and court the return of the plague. Obama’s Science advisor proclaimed he was firmly in the Malthus camp. (Holden views) One would like to assume the plague was a last resort if his support of forced abortions and sterilization did not accomplish a major reduction in the population.
This administration seems to be building up the rights of the infected. This civil rights campaign was started during the AIDs crisis when it was deemed unfair to label those with AID’s as sick. Eventually the campaign gave us the HIPPA laws that place the rights of the infected over the healthy. At least AID’s wasn’t contagious. Now it is being proposed that the right of an Ebola patient to mingle among the healthy shall not be infringed. The nurse/democrat activist Kaci Hickox’s lawyer is planning on suing to regain her freedom to infect others. (Kaci suit) Despite the fact contagious diseases like Ebola are by executive order one of many diseases that are legally quarantiable. (Executive order#13295)
So while our troops who were sent to battle Ebola in Africa are subjected to quarantine in Italy, activists, doctors and soon non-citizens will be free to roam. In our transformed America it is still illegal to shout fire in a crowded theater but you can sit with Ebola if you don’t feel you are contagious enough. Some day we may figure out how to quarantine the stupidity which seems to infect Washington.
