For the first time in its 10-year history the 2014 Classic Rock Roll of Honour Awards were presented outside of the United Kingdom. Instead of its usual London venue at the Camden Roundhouse, it was held in Los Angeles Tuesday night at the Avalon Hollywood.
As if there aren’t enough award shows to go around, this one truly appreciates the rock genre, and its guitars, without competing against today’s mass-marketed genres of pop, rap, hip hop, and EDM.
These British music awards are sponsored by the U.K. magazine “Classic Rock.” Every year they attract a who’s who of rock dignitaries with the likes of The Who, Rush, Alice Cooper, Ozzy Osbourne, and many others.
Some have compared these award ceremonies to a better British version of the U.S.’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame without its cliquish politics and better jams. Those in attendance Tuesday were Joe Perry, Brian May, Eric Burdon, Ozzy Osbourne, Dave Mustaine, and Gregg Allman. One blogger joked of seeing Sarah Palin, Buzz Aldrin, Mark Zuckerberg, and the Pittsburgh Steelers were seen in crowd…not.
Definitely seen throughout the night was Southern California’s own Sammy Hagar. He hosted the event to a packed house inside the historic ballroom. The first award of the evening went to best new band that was voted exclusively by the fans.
Other highlights included a video message from Metallica’s Lars Ulrich thanking the Classic Rock Roll of Honours for the award of Film of the Year – “Through The Never.” Queen + Adam Lambert received band of the year with May and Lambert accepting their award on stage.
For lifetime achievements The Doors were honored with the coveted Inspiration award in the city where it all began for them back in the mid-1960s. Gregg Allman was presented with the Living Legend.
