yeahstub.com: Why do people refer to Mickey’s BBQ sauce as sexy?
Mickeys Momma’s BBQ sauce: Because they take it home and rub all over themselves. I’m just joking it is because they tend to really like what we are doing with it in regards to the texture. Instead of watery sauces ours actually has onions and chunks of pineapple in it. We go all the way out with the texture. That’s what makes it very sexy!
yeahstub.com: I heard that you carry two flavors Lemon &Pineapple and Teriyaki & Peppercorn. Is that true?
Mickeys Momma’s BBQ sauce: We are working on a mango sauce and a very fiery sauce which we call the fire of the devil sauce. It is going to be very interesting it is really going to blow the roof off off of some of these habanero sauces that you have out there right now. More sauces are definitely coming.
yeahstub.com: Where can people go to get Mickeys Momma’s BBQ sauce?
Mickeys Momma’s BBQ sauce: They can actually order it online we do not have any brick and mortars right now. We are working on that. They can go to mickeymommasbbq.com or the best place to get it at is on the our Facebook page. If you Google Mickeys Momma’s BBQ sauce the Facebook page will pop right up.
yeahstub.com: A lot of people thought there was going to be a BBQ tasting. Do you ever host BBQ sample tastings?
Mickeys Momma’s BBQ sauce: We actually had the BBQ Championship at Dana Point recently. We had people try our sauce and they were very impressed. We also do a lot of festivals here in the Southern California area. Follow our Facebook page and you will find out all the places that we will be at in the coming future. We just wrapped up our festival season so it will probably start up again towards February. Right now we are working on marketing and getting into stores. We also have a world famous tri tip sandwich that we are trying to get into small mom and pops sandwich shops. It sells quite well.
yeahstub.com: Why did you pick the name for the sauce to be Mickeys Momma’s BBQ sauce?
Mickeys Momma’s BBQ sauce: Well my mother invented the sauce around 1962. She was actually a housekeeper for some very prominent socialites that lived in Beverly Hills and Malibu and they loved her sauce so much that they were using it on everything. They asked her to make gallons of it and they would actually give it to friends during Christmas time. My real name is Milton Island but my nickname is Mickey that is how Mickeys Momma’s BBQ sauce came to be. After my mother passed away we decided to honor with doing a sauce.
yeahstub.com: What kind of ingredients are in the sauce? I heard there is some alcohol in it.
Mickeys Momma’s BBQ sauce: There actually is some alcohol in our Lemon & Pineapple sauce. We also use beer in our Teriyaki & Peppercorn sauce. There is also Jack Daniels in our sauce that you can taste. There is not enough in it to get drunk though.
yeahstub.com: What meats does the BBQ sauce taste good on? I’m a pescaterian does it taste good on shrimp?
Mickeys Momma’s BBQ sauce: Her BBQ sauce tastes good on everything you can put her sauce on asparagus. We actually did that we’ve had vegetarians that wanted to try it. The vegetarians had on asparagus and were wowed. They said it taste like nothing they never had before. You can put it on chicken, beef, pork, shrimp, and on anything it just tastes great.
yeahstub.com: For people that are new to barbequing what is the best way to use it? Do you marinate the meat in the sauce over night? Should you brush it on while you are cooking? And can it be used as a dipping sauce?
Mickeys Momma’s BBQ sauce: It can be used a dipping sauce but actually it is a finishing sauce. It is not one of those sauces that you marinate meats in all night. You want to cook your food, brush on the sauce, then put it back on the grill so that it can caramelize. Then you take if off the grill and brush it on again. Then you are in food heaven.
Leaders in food industry and Mickeys Momma’s BBQ sauce fans called into radio station.
Jimaine Miller aka Def Chef: I want to hear about the sauce. Where are you at?
Mickeys Momma’s BBQ sauce: We are in Los Angeles.
Def Chef: I need to link up with you and get some of your product. I’m a caterer and I do fund raising and private events. I’m an executive chef at an art gallery in downtown Seattle. I’m trying to get this business model popping between Black chefs where we do business with each other. For instance if I’m dealing with chefs who make good sauce I don’t even need to make that stuff. I could just buy it from you. I can help you sell your sauce.
Mickeys Momma’s BBQ sauce: Thank you we are always looking for ways to expand. This is actually a Los Angeles BBQ sauce there are very few that claim that. We’re probably the first one. You have heard of sauces in Missouri and Texas but probably never heard of a California BBQ sauce using pineapples and onions. I would love to get some out to you and if it something that we could partner with that would be great.
yeahstub.com: Jimaine can you tell us where we can go to hear more about your product and your catering business?
Jimaine Miller aka Def Chef: I’m doing a Facebook and an instagram campaign. You can find me Def Chef on Facebook or Jimaine Miller. I have a website www.defchef.com. It is not fully running. I just had a tasting on Saturday at the 2312 Art Gallery we did a Biggie Smalls exhibit. Every Wednesday we do Movies and Munchies. We just had our first Black Bite of Seattle. So if you want to come up and set up a booth and sell your sauce or something you are cooking you can do that.
Mickeys Momma’s BBQ sauce: I would love to do that emerging markets is something I would love to do. Seattle would be a great market for what we are trying to do.
yeahstub.com: Can we use the sauce during the holidays does it taste good on ham or turkey? Has anyone tried that?
Mickeys Momma’s BBQ sauce: Oh yeah we tried it on turkey. We actually tried a BBQ turkey. What we did first was deep fried the turkey. We just basted it with Mickeys Momma’s sexy BBQ sauce. The one in pineapple. We also did one with the teriyaki & peppercorn. I think people liked the teriyaki & peppercorn I on the other hand am partial to the softer sauces. They both turned out really well.
yeahstub.com: What has been your best memory on your journey on making this sauce?
Mickeys Momma’s BBQ sauce: I think it has brought our family and business partners closer. That is what my mom would want. God bless her soul. I think she has been looking down on us and is blessing us in a lot of ways. We are spending a lot more time together and we come with different ideas. Which is something I wanted with this business. I think that is one of the most memorable and gratifying things I can say about doing Mickeys Momma’s BBQ sauce.
