Reanne Pederson, of Fargo, North Dakota, is the mom whose newborn died in June after she allegedly fells asleep while breastfeeding the baby. The 5-day-old boy’s initial cause of death was suffocation, and the the mom supposedly fell asleep after snorting painkiller drugs. However, Wednesday, Pederson was formally charged in the newborn’s death from ingesting drugs before breastfeeding.
Pederson, 32, phoned Fargo police on June 13 when she woke up and found her newborn son not breathing and without a pulse. Apparently, she was breastfeeding at the time, but fell asleep and thought she accidentally cut off the child’s breathing supply with her body.
Reanne Pederson’s son was rushed to a local hospital when CPR attempts failed to revive him. And a day after being placed on life-support, the infant died. Fargo investigators initially ruled the newborn baby’s death due to natural causes, but after a deeper probe, the child’s mom admitted to using painkillers before drifting off to sleep, according to a report out today by Hollywood Life.
Pederson’s mother-in-law, Lisa Miller, is trying to wrap her head around the fact that her grandchild is dead. She believes the death was a direct result of the child overdosing on snorted drugs.
“He was beautiful, he was perfect.”
When the child was born, the grieving grandparent had her suspicions that her daughter was using narcotics or prescription pain killers because the newborn appeared to be going through withdrawal.
“She said ‘Oh, that’s what he was doing in my stomach,’ and I thought, ‘That didn’t seem normal,’ it was more like withdraw. That morning I called social services and the West Fargo Police Department called me. And I said, ‘As far as I’m concerned, if anything happens to him, she killed him.”
Reanne Pederson told Fargo authorities that she used drugs before her newborn was delivered. Moreover, reports suggests the troubled mom snorted hydrocodone for a number of days after the child was born and while breastfeeding.
Prosecutors think the Fargo mom got high on the night of her newborn baby’s death by crushing up pain killers and snorting them. At some she must have fell asleep while breastfeeding the child who consumed milk laced with a lethal mix of controlled drugs.
“A million times I cried. If love alone could have saved you, you never would have died. In life, I loved you dearly, in death I love you still,” Miller read from the child’s obituary.
Reanne Pederson is free on bail, but the Fargo newborn death investigation continues. The North Dakota mom, who has two other minor children, faces negligent homicide charges and the loss of child custody.
