Hot flashes are a common and troubling symptom of the menopause. They can be relieved by hormone replacement therapy (HRT); however, some women have medical conditions that preclude their use or just prefer to avoid hormonal preparation. Dr. Richard Fain, MD, FACOG, is a board certified obstetrician gynecologist who holds the opinion that Relizen is a non-hormonal product that can relieve hot flashes. I consulted him to obtain the reasoning behind his strong interest in the product.
A number of non-hormonal products are currently available on the marketplace; however, many women do not attain any significant benefit from them. I asked Dr. Fain how Relizen stood apart from these products. He told me that Relizen is a unique non-hormonal treatment for the relief of hot flashes associated with menopause. It is not a prescription treatment. He explained that it is natural, non-estrogenic, and does not use phytoestrogens. Although it has just been launched in the United States, he has learned that Relizen has been used by women in Europe for almost 20 years under different trade names, and is a leading menopause product in France. Many physicians in the field of women’s health are joining him in support of Relizen, due to the extensive clinical data behind the product and positive feedback from women using it.
I asked Dr. Fain if clinical studies had been conducted regarding Relizen’s effectiveness. He noted the product is backed by a number of studies published in leading medical journals. It has been evaluated in peer-reviewed studies published in the journals Menopause, Climacteric, Genesis, and Cancers Au Feminin. The clinical studies evaluated Relizen’s impact on alleviating hot flashes and other symptoms of menopause, as well as Relizen’s effects on hormone levels.
He stressed one placebo-controlled trial published in Climacteric, where Relizen produced a significant reduction in hot flashes compared to placebo with no significant change in hormone levels. In addition, in a patient survey published in Genesis, women reported improvements in quality of life after three months of Relizen use. Of the 400 women surveyed, 67% experienced reductions in night sweat intensity and 64% experienced reductions in hot flash intensity, among other positive improvements.
I asked Dr. Fain what active ingredients were contained in Relizen and their mode of action. He explained that Relizen’s active ingredient is a purified Swedish flower pollen extract, which contains more than 180 nutrients. The pollen used to make Relizen is harvested from flowers native to the cold, arid climate of Sweden. The pollen grain husk (the source of hay fever allergies) is removed and discarded using a proprietary Swedish biotechnology process, removing pollen allergens and leaving behind only the beneficial inner cytoplasm (cellular material). This nutrient-rich cytoplasm inside the pollen grain is what makes Relizen effective.
I asked him about patient feedback regarding the product. He noted that a number of patients from his practice in Livingston, New Jersey are currently taking Relizen because he always offers the product as an option to treat their hot flashes. His patients appreciate that Relizen is natural and not a drug. He also has a number of patients taking Relizen who have told him they prefer a non-hormonal approach to managing their symptoms. What he has experienced in his practice is that some women feel the effects of Relizen quite quickly, while for others it may take up to a couple of months to realize the full benefits of the product. These benefits include a reduction in the number and intensity of hot flashes, as well as improvement in other symptoms of menopause. As these symptoms can have a big impact on quality of life, he is pleased to report that Relizen provides real relief and my patients are quite grateful.
