Toys and games can prove to be extremely beneficial for a child’s flourishing cognitive development. Lakeshore Learning Materials is a company that is dedicated to producing such top-quality educational toys for children ages birth to twelve. Recently, I was given the opportunity to review a building set sold by Lakeshore Learning called the “Build-It-Yourself Woodworking Kit.”
The “Build-It-Yourself Woodworking Kit” is an excellent tool for children to enhance both their motor skills and their creativity. The set consists of: pine wood in a wide variety of shapes, nails, two pencils, a light-weight hammer, a ruler, sandpaper, glue, and an instruction guide which includes suggestions for seven different projects. In total, there are over 80 pieces included in the set and everything is neatly packaged in a handy 7 3/4″ x 12″ box that is easy to store.
Although this product is recommended for children ages 4+, because of the inclusion of a hammer and nails it is best if an adult is present when younger children play with it. Based on the ideas listed in the manual, builders can create a coin bank, a train, a plane, a pencil holder, a bird feeder, a name plate, or a letter holder. Given the wide variety of shapes, children can also decide to make their own unique structure or simply play with the pieces as they would with building blocks.
Some projects are more extensive than others and therefore require the use of more parts. Thus, before starting any project the individual must know precisely which pieces they will need. Luckily, this pre-planning is made simple by the comprehensive instructions that outline exactly which parts will be required. Interestingly, although the instructions include a detailed outline of each shape of wooden block, there are no identifying numbers or letters actually printed on the blocks. Hence, it is up to the child to measure the different shapes to ensure they are the correct fit. This subsequently provides an excellent opportunity for children to grasp the concept of measurement.
The “Build-It-Yourself Woodworking Kit” is priced at $34.99 which seems quite expensive but, considering that children will be able to make all seven “suggested projects” listed in the instructions (with some spare pieces left over), the price is actually quite reasonable. Moreover, the high quality of the smoothed pine wood helps to justify the cost.
This set is especially excellent if it is used for a creation that is intended to last for a long time, especially since the experience of creating something has positive effects on a young person’s mental and emotional growth. If one has a long-term project (such as a birdhouse) in mind then the nails and glue provided in this set will ensure a very long-lasting final result that will be enjoyed for years to come. However, parents must be aware that no paint or adornments (like glitter and rhinestones) are included in this set so additional materials will need to be purchased if a child wishes to beautify whatever they craft from the wood.
Overall, the “Build-It-Yourself Woodworking Kit” is a fine product that will surely keep little builders occupied for several hours. It is also a great way for parents and children to spend quality time together and bond while exercising their creative crafting abilities. I give the “Build-It-Yourself Woodworking Kit” 5/5 stars and highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in creating things from wood.
