“Re-Animator – The Musical” has been revived and is offering bloody (literally) good Halloween fun at the Steve Allen Theater in Hollywood through November 23. The award-winning show has been adapted from the H.P. Lovecraft story and is based on cult favorite film “H.P. Lovecraft’s Re-Animator” produced by Brian Yuzna.
With book by Dennis Paoli, Stuart Gordon and William J. Norris and music and lyrics by Mark Nutter the show is directed by Stuart Gordon and features musical direction by Peter Adams and choreography by Cynthia Carle. Produced by Dean Schramm and Stuart Gordon the musical is presented by The Schramm Group LLC and Red Hen Productions in association with Trepany House under the Artistic Direction of Amit Itelman.
Graham Skipper returns as Herbert West and operatic Jesse Merlin, is back as Dr. Carl Hill who loses his head for Meg, the dean’s beautiful daughter only to actually lose it at the hands of Herbert West. Also returning (in alphabetical order) are Cynthia Carle, Brian Gillespie, Marlon Grace, and Liesel Hanson playing an assortment of doctors, nurses and rampaging zombies. New to the cast is Darren Ritchie as Dan Cain, the handsome young medical student (and West’s hapless roommate) in love with the dean’s beautiful daughter, now played by Jessica Howell. And Ken Hudson Campbell plays the Dean of the medical school whom West transforms into a mindless zombie.
“Re-Animator” tells the story of Herbert West, a brilliant young medical student who has created a glowing green serum that can bring the dead back to life. What should be a medical breakthrough results in hideous monstrosities and ghastly consequences.
Mixing campy characters with operatic quality singing of Nutter’s music and lyrics this show takes the audience on a fast-paced one-act ride of experiments gone wrong.
Courageous audience members who want to be a part of the “action” and don’t mind a bit of a bath can sit in the first three rows (the seats are covered in plastic) and are provided with garbage bag ponchos, if they want them.
This show offers just the right mix of horror and hilarity.
“Re-Animator – The Musical” performs 8 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday through November 23, 2014. Admission is $25. Call 800-595-4849 or visit www.trepanyhouse.org
