Teresa Giudice and her husband Joe Giudice broke their silence in a sit down interview with Andy Cohen. The one-on-one interview was shot just a day after the “Real Housewives of New Jersey” stars were sentenced to prison after they pleaded guilty to fraud charges. The couple discussed the aftermath of the sentencing on “Watch What Happens Live” with the most interesting part being Joe’s reaction to his wife facing prison time and his admittance to using her in the fraud scheme.
In Part 1 of the special segment, which aired Monday, Oct. 6, Joe opened up about how he felt when he learned of his wife’s sentencing and also his own sentencing as he didn’t expect either of them to get as many months in prison they did. He told Cohen:
“It was devastating. I actually felt like I got hit in the back of the neck with a bat. I think [the sentencing] was a little high. But I mean, um, I didn’t think I was gonna get that much…I don’t know. It is what it is.”
Much of his reaction, besides seeing the mother of his children rattled by the reality of the sentencing, appeared to be his own guilt. After Teresa discussed why she accepted a plea deal and the emotional impact of the whole ordeal had on her entire family, Joe opened up and admitted that his wife was just a pawn in his fraud scheme which happened before the reality stars started shooting “RHONJ.”
He claimed he didn’t think Teresa would get jail time and added, “I even took all blame and full responsibility for everything. It wasn’t like she really had [a] part…in my businesses. Whatever, she really didn’t.” After Cohen asked Teresa if she was aware of the documents she was signing, she claimed she had no idea and trusted her husband. Then Cohen turned the attention back on Joe about the false loans and fake W-2 forms.
“Alright, whatever, I was taking out false loans…They were handing me the paperwork,” Joe said. “Whatever the forms were, she had better credit. So, we used her. She never even came to closings, she’s never been to closings. She might of signed one document.”
Throughout the rest of the interview Teresa revealed that the couple has not told their younger daughters about their upcoming jail time and maintains that they will be fine and stay strong mainly for their daughters. Joe said he was more worried about his wife in prison, joking about the possibility of another woman touching her. Teresa responded that she will hold up in prison, replying, “No one can push my buttons anymore.”
