Rock & Roll legends Styx played the MontBleu Theater inside the MontBleu Resort Tahoe to a completely sold out audience of die-hard fans. There was not an empty spot in the entire 3,000+ seat venue, the place was packed.
Styx is an American rock band from Chicago that became famous for its albums from the mid-1970s and early 1980s. They are best known for melding the style of pop rock with the power of hard-rock guitar, strong ballads and elements of international musical theater.
Members of the band include, James “J.Y.” Young (guitar, backing and lead vocals, additional keyboards), Tommy Shaw (guitar, lead and backing vocals, mandolin, autoharp), Todd Sucherman (drums, percussion, backing vocals), Lawrence Gowan (lead and backing vocals, keyboards, additional guitar), Ricky Phillips (bass, backing vocals, additional guitar) and Chuck Panozzo (bass, backing vocals, bass pedals). Panozzo only plays on select shows due to health reasons.
The set lasted 90 minutes and went like this,
“The Grand Illusion”, “Too Much Time On My Hands”, “Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man)”, “Lady”, “Light Up”, “Miss America”, “Crystal Ball”, “Walrus”, “Blue Collar Man (Long Nights)”, “Come Sail Away”, “Gowan Melody” and two encore songs, “Rockin’ The Paradise” and “Renegade”.
The crowd sang along the entire set as was instructed by the band. During the set, guitarist Young told a story of how he really missed the days when everyone held up their lighters during some of the ballads, he also said, he likes when people now hold up their cell phones, “I might even like it a little better” he said, he then proceeded to ask the crowd to do so and the place lit up with cell phone lights all around, it was pretty cool.
Styx started this tour at the beginning of this year, they played the Silver Legacy Casino and Resort Reno on Feb. 7, 2014. (read review) Tour manager George Packer told this examiner, “We have not slowed down since we started this tour, we only have eight or nine (maybe) shows left (on this tour) after we take a week or so off after this show”.
It doesn’t matter where Styx plays, you always get their best performance, that’s what makes them truly rock legends. Very much worth the ticket price.
A great time was had by all.
This was this examiners first shoot at MontBleu Resort, the staff was very nice and helped out throughout the whole show. Great sound and especially the lighting. There’s not a bad seat in the house to boot. I truly hope they let me shoot there again.
