On Saturday, June 7 at 3 p.m., Sci-Quest (1435 Paramount Drive, Huntsville) will host their first Beer Quest event, an adults-only experience that explores the wonderful world of brewing science with local breweries and homebrewers.
Sci-Quest is a hands-on science center in Huntsville with a mission to “promote science literacy through interactive exhibits and innovative learning experiences for a diverse and expanding audience.” The core of this audience may be the area’s children and families, but Beer Quest is an event that allows adults the chance to enjoy the wide-eyed wonderment of science once again. The following local breweries will be on-site to discuss the brewing process and serve up a selection of their beers for tasting:
- Below the Radar Brewhouse
- Blue Pants Brewery
- Rocket Republic Brewing Company
- Salty Nut Brewery
- Straight to Ale
- and possibly more!
In addition to our commercial brewers, there will be a Homebrewers Showcase where local homebrew enthusiasts will be available to give tips and educate guests on how they can make and bottle their own brews at home. Wish You Were Beer will also be in attendance to showcase their homebrew equipment, and will even be raffling off a homebrew kit during the event. Thanks to the area’s homebrewers and professional brewers, all attendees will receive a proper education in the science behind fermentation.
Worry not; this is not the type of event that will be all education and no play. There will be beer-themed carnival games such as a beer bottle ring toss, KEVA planks challenge, and bottle cap toss set up throughout the Science Center to try your luck at for the chance to win prizes. There will also be a DIY: Upcycled Beer Crafts station to show you how to make some repurposed beer crafts for you to take home. After all of that beer knowledge and fun, you are going to need some food to refuel. Free water and snacks will be provided by Earth Fare, and local food trucks Badd Newz BBQ, On-On Tacos, Earth and Stone Wood Fired Pizza, and Rollin Lobstah will also be set up if you are looking for something a bit more substantial.
General admission tickets are available for $20 in advance (click here to purchase) or $25 at the door day of the event. Tickets only gain you admittance into the event. Since Alabama laws prevent “unlimited free samples” at events, attendees will have to purchase a souvenir pint glass for $10 to partake in the beer tasting. Carnival tickets will also be available for purchase at the front desk for those wanting to participate in the games and crafts. You must be 21 or older to attend this event and IDs will be checked at the door.
Whether you are a homebrewer looking to further hone your skills, a beer lover interested in taking up the hobby of homebrewing or simply a beer enthusiast seeking to expand your knowledge of this fine beverage, it sounds like Beer Quest is the event for you. If you are free on Saturday, go ahead a grab some tickets to experience this fun and educational event at Sci-Quest. Prost!
