The final episode titled “Go Now” finds the inhabitants of Chester’s Mill scrambling to find another way out as the dome continues to contract around them. Matt Webb Mitovich from Yahoo!News stated yesterday that, ‘Season 2 … evoked Stephen King’s The Shining — and in doing so, the summertime drama took its first major step into channeling some of Mr. King’s horror themes.’
One of those themes involves Big Jim, and he seems to be unraveling. When he gets Pauline back to the school with Sam’s help after she is stabbed in the back by Lyle, he refuses to accept the inevitable. Rebecca gives the dying Pauline a small amount of morphine to ease her pain. Big Jim goes to the clinic looking for fluids they can give her to offset the loss of blood. After he leaves, Pauline asks Junior to retrieve her brushes and paint.
Once alone with Rebecca, she begs her to use the rest of the morphine to end her suffering. At first Rebecca refuses, but eventually relents. Big Jim and Sam return just in time to say goodbye. They notice the syringe in Rebecca’s hand and she tells them what she did and that it was at Pauline’s request.
Filled with rage, Big Jim knocks Sam unconscious and uses a hammer to bludgeon Rebecca to death. Junior returns to find both of his parents gone. Sam rouses and tells him what happened as Junior covers Rebecca’s body. Big Jim takes Pauline back to the studio and threatens that if the Dome doesn’t bring his wife back within three seconds, he will go on a killing spree. When nothing happens, he sets fire to the studio and leaves.
In the previous episode, Melanie disappeared down a crater that opened beneath her. Joe and Norrie investigate and find a tunnel underneath, which they believe may be a new way out. They fill Barbie in on what they discover and it is decided that they need to evacuate everyone to the crater. They still don’t know for sure if it is the way out, but they are running out of time and decide they have no other option. They use school buses to transport the townspeople and once they arrive Barbie leads them down.
Julia receives a disturbing call from a clearly upset Andrea, who says she needs help. She rushes over, grabbing a baseball bat and a knife on a small table by the door before entering. She finds Big Jim holding Andrea at gunpoint. He tells her he knew she would come running and to put the bat down.
He shoots Andrea in the head, telling Julia that what he was doing was payback because the Dome wouldn’t bring Pauline back. He holsters the gun and as he moves toward her, she grabs a cast iron skillet and hits his hand, which causes him to drop the hammer in his other hand. She runs into another room where he catches her. She uses the knife to stab him in the foot and manages to get away.
She runs into Sam and Junior and after explaining what happened, Sam helps her back to the crater while Junior goes after his father. They have a brief confrontation and Junior shoots him in the shoulder before heading back to the others. Clearly Big Jim has lost all reasoning. Andrea Reiher from zap2it put it this way, ‘In the book, Big Jim gets real dark, real fast. On the show, Big Jim has vacillated between mustache-twirling villain and big-hearted hero who just wants to help his town. But the Season 2 finale finally saw Big Jim go over to a dark side he can’t come back from when he murdered Rebecca Pine.’
Barbie is waiting for Julia and they go down into the tunnel, which is decaying due to small earthquakes generated by the dome’s movement. Sam goes on ahead and Barbie jumps over a fissure, planning to help Julia. The gap widens and she is unable to jump across with her injured leg. She encourages Barbie to go on, telling him that she believes he is the one in Pauline’s vision that would lead everyone to the way out. Reluctantly he goes, promising to come back for her.
Junior climbs down to join her and the gap is now too wide for him to cross. Big Jim staggers through the woods, yelling for his son. The shaking continues, causing small trees to cover the top of the crater. Further inside, Barbie and the others have to decide which way to go when the tunnel splits in two. They decide to take the one Joe and Norrie believe they were led down by a butterfly earlier. Once inside a large cavern, they are amazed by thousands of glowing butterflies covering the ceiling. The butterflies rush out and they are stunned to see not a way out, but what looks like a dead end.
One butterfly lands on the wall and Barbie touches that spot, which begins to glow and he moves back. As the rocks fall away, there is a bright white light and Melanie steps forward. Holding out her hand, she tells Barbie she is there to take him home. Everyone stares at her in stunned silence.
At the end of the episode new questions arise. Melanie appears to be wet, is the way out through water again? There are infants and children, how will they make it through a water portal? Will Julia and Junior find a way to get across? They’re basically trapped and if Big Jim manages to get to them how will they survive? Ratings indicate that there could be another season, so eventually these questions should be answered.
Did you watch the finale? Will they make it to the outside, and what happens then? What are your thoughts?
